How to Propagate Begonia maculata by Cuttings

Begonia maculata is a very abundantly blooming flower that many people often keep at home for decoration, and the care method for Begonia maculata is relatively simple. With proper light, fertilizer and water, and timely pruning, it can be maintained very well. If you want to grow a few more pots, how should you carry out cutting propagation? Now let me tell you.

1. Cutting Time

There is no seasonal restriction for cuttings; generally, they can be taken at any time of the four seasons, but cuttings taken from early to mid-June have a relatively higher survival rate. This is mainly because the temperature during this period is about 17-18 degrees, and the humidity is also kept relatively high. This is also the stage when Begonia maculata grows most vigorously, so the survival rate of cuttings at this time will be greatly improved.

2. Cutting Method

For the cuttings, it is best to choose the best-developed tip of Begonia maculata, about 15 cm in length. The branch should carry two top leaves and tender buds. Remove the excess leaves and cut the branch diagonally at the bamboo-joint section. After cutting, place the branch in the growing medium to cultivate it. For the soil, generally choose fresh, clean vermiculite, because it has the effect of inhibiting bacteria and also provides excellent moisture retention and drainage. If there is no vermiculite, coarse-textured river sand can be used as a substitute, but it must be disinfected by sun exposure before use. After cutting, be careful to avoid strong direct sunlight, and at the same time ensure the humidity of the growing environment, spraying water once at noon. Generally, roots will form in half a month; keep the temperature between 20-24 degrees. One month after rooting, it can be potted up. Water culture can also be used, but remember to change the water frequently, generally once every two days, and transplant it after roots have formed.

3. Types of Cuttings

Leaf cuttings can be taken in summer or autumn; if it is an indoor environment, they can also be taken in winter. For leaf cuttings, choose fully developed leaves. Rhizome cuttings are suitable for Begonia maculata with relatively dense rhizomes. The cutting time can be chosen in spring or autumn. Cut 3-5 cm from the base of the plant and insert it diagonally into the growing medium.
