How to Fertilize Clivia During the Growing Season

Clivia likes fertilizer, and it must be fertilized in appropriate amounts. Improper or excessive fertilization is detrimental to growth and can even cause root rot or scorched, withered plants. Clivia has different nutrient requirements at different stages of growth and development, so different fertilization methods are used at each stage, such as base fertilizer, top dressing, and foliar feeding.

Base fertilizer: Its purpose is to create the conditions for plant growth and development and meet the plant's nutrient needs. Base fertilizer for Clivia should be applied when repotting, which is done once every 2 years. Commonly used materials worked into the soil include manure (that is, poultry and livestock manure), compost, green manure, and soybean cake fertilizer.

Top dressing: Its main purpose is to promote plant growth. Liquid fertilizer is the main type. Apply less to newly planted plants, and then gradually increase the amount as the plant grows larger and produces more leaves. When fertilizing, scrape aside the potting soil and work the fertilizer into the soil at a depth of 2-3 cm, but be careful that the fertilizer is not too close to the root system, so as to avoid burning the roots. Spray with Xinguo lipid film, which on the plant surface can prevent infection by pathogens, improve resistance to natural disasters, increase the intensity of photosynthesis, and protect the seedlings so they grow strong and healthy.

Foliar top dressing: This fertilization method is mainly used to make up for the lack of nutrients in the soil, so as to solve the problem of nutrient deficiency in the plant, enabling seedlings to grow quickly and flowers and fruits to grow plump. Foliar feeding means spraying a diluted fertilizer solution directly onto the leaf surface of the plant with a sprayer, allowing nutrient elements to penetrate through the leaf epidermal cells and stomata into the leaf tissues and then be transported throughout the plant. When spraying, spray evenly on both the front and back sides of the leaves. Spraying should stop after the plant blooms. It must be noted that this method can only be used when the plant is found to be lacking fertilizer. If the plant has sufficient nutrients and is growing vigorously, it should not be used. Spraying Huaduo Zhuangdiling at the bud stage can promote strong buds, plump petals, vivid flower color, rich fragrance, and a longer flowering period.
