How to grow Aglaia odorata so it blooms abundantly and smells fragrant
Aglaia odorata likes warmth, sunny spots and plenty of fertilizer. The optimum growing temperature is 20°C to 25°C. Under normal conditions, with ample sunlight and fairly high temperatures (around 30°C), the flowers it produces have a strong fragrance. If it is placed in a shaded spot in summer and given a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer at the same time, this is one of the main reasons Aglaia odorata fails to bloom, or blooms sparsely with a weak scent.
Therefore, during its growth and development period, Aglaia odorata needs to be kept outdoors in a spot with ample sunlight, and care should be taken to apply somewhat more liquid fertilizer containing plenty of phosphorus. It is best to use fermented alum fertilizer water made by soaking crushed bone meal, fish bones, chicken bones and the like; regularly supplementing with chemical fertilizer rich in phosphorus or fermented rice-washing water also helps bud formation, and results in more flowers, golden-yellow color and a fresh, delicate fragrance.
Aglaia odorata likes moisture, and during the growing period it should be watered in appropriate amounts. If watered too much, it easily leads to root rot and yellowing, falling leaves; watering too much during the flowering period easily causes flowers and buds to drop; watering too little causes the leaf edges to dry up and the buds to wither. Therefore, when summer temperatures are high, besides watering 1 to 2 times a day, also frequently spray and wash the branches and leaves with clean water and sprinkle water on the ground where it stands, to raise the air humidity.
At the same time, fertilizing should also be appropriate. Since Aglaia odorata blooms many times within a year, after each flowering it should promptly be given 2 to 3 follow-up applications of fully decomposed, dilute liquid fertilizer, so that it blooms continuously with a rich fragrance. Aglaia odorata likes acidic soil, and for pot cultivation a growing medium based mainly on leaf mold should be chosen. During the vigorous growth period, spraying once a week with 0.2% ferrous sulfate solution gives green leaves and abundant flowers.
