How to Grow Clivia Indoors

Soil selection. Clivia has fleshy roots and thrives in loose, fertile, well-aerated soil. Fertile, loose neutral or slightly acidic soil is the best choice for Clivia. Soil selection is the first key factor for success in cultivating Clivia.

Watering. Remember one principle when watering Clivia: do not water unless the soil is dry, and when you do water, water thoroughly. If you water too little at one time, the harm to the Clivia is especially great. As for the watering time for Clivia, it is generally best to water in the morning or evening. While watering, avoid the flower center to prevent it from rotting.

Fertilizing. As for fertilizer selection for Clivia, phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer are beneficial to its growth, while nitrogen fertilizer can be applied sparingly. When fertilizing, be sure to control the amount; excessive amounts can easily cause the leaves of Clivia to show scorched symptoms. Before bringing the flowerpot indoors in winter, you can use bone meal, fried sesame seeds, cooked soybeans, etc., or a compound fertilizer, and water it in once every 15 to 20 days.

Keeping warm. The most suitable temperature for Clivia growth in winter is 15-20°C, and it is best not to let it drop below 10°C. At 0°C, Clivia will suffer cold damage, so good insulation measures must be taken in winter. Spray an appropriate amount of Hushu Dajiangjun to keep it warm and prevent freezing. Alternatively, after the flower stem emerges, be careful to maintain the indoor temperature, generally around 18°C is suitable.

Light. Plant growth requires light. For Clivia, it prefers scattered light and cannot be exposed to direct strong light. In winter, pay attention to Clivia's light requirements. Clivia grown indoors can be placed in a spot at home with ample light. If the Clivia is about to bloom, it needs even more ample light to ensure the healthy development of the flower buds. Also ensure good ventilation and suitable light. (Danni)
