Caring for Clivia in High-Temperature Seasons

Clivia (Clivia miniata) likes warm, humid and semi-shaded environments. If the temperature exceeds 28°C, its growth will be inhibited, and if the temperature exceeds 30°C, it will be in a semi-dormant state. In many parts of China, summers are hot, with temperatures reaching above 30°C, which is very unfavorable for the growth of Clivia. Because of the high temperatures, the leaves tend to grow leggy, becoming thin and slender, with a rough surface that turns yellow, and at the same time the leaf vein pattern becomes unclear, detracting from its ornamental value. Hot and stuffy weather can also easily cause root rot. In order to help Clivia safely get through the hot midsummer, a series of care measures centered on cooling must be adopted.

1. Shading and cooling

Summer sunlight is intense, so shading measures must be taken. At this time, it is best to let it receive 2 hours of morning light each day; a grape trellis or the shade of a large tree is even more ideal. This is because in such an environment, the temperature in areas of direct sunlight is 5-10°C lower, and ventilation is good. After autumn begins, move it to a sunny spot; if it is being cared for indoors, it should be placed on a north-facing balcony.

2. Watering to cool down

In summer, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, you can use a small sprayer to spray water on the leaves several times, and at the same time sprinkle water on the ground, which both lowers the temperature in the area and increases air humidity.

3. Spreading sand to cool down

Spread a thick layer of coarse sand on the balcony, then place the Clivia pot on the sand surface. In summer, sprinkle water on the sand surface 2-3 times a day to lower the temperature and also increase air humidity.

4. Appropriate watering

The summer climate is hot, and Clivia grows slowly or stops growing. Therefore, watering must be appropriate; generally, it is best to keep the soil moisture content at around 30%.

5. Restricting fertilization

In summer, if the temperature can be lowered below 25°C, a dilute liquid fertilizer can be applied once every half month; this can shorten or eliminate Clivia's dormancy and make it bloom earlier. If the temperature is above 25°C, fertilization must be stopped, otherwise it can easily cause root rot.
