How to Tell If a Clivia Needs Watering

Fellow plant growers probably all know the saying "water when dry, water thoroughly when wet." Many beginner growers do not quite understand it. What it means is that you should wait until the potting soil is dry before watering again, and when you do water, water thoroughly. Below, let us look at how to tell whether a clivia needs watering.

The roots of the clivia are fleshy roots that can store a lot of water, so it is generally quite tolerant of dryness. However, the clivia does need a somewhat moist environment, so watering a clivia also requires care:

1. Tap: tap the flower pot at about 1/2 to 1/3 of its height. A crisp sound means the soil no longer holds enough water and it is time to water. A dull sound means there is plenty of water and no watering is needed.

2. Weigh: before watering, lift the pot and feel its weight. Water it. After watering, lift the pot again and feel the weight. Over time, once you have gained some experience, you will know just by lifting the pot whether it is time to water.

3. Probe: this is the most direct method. Put a finger about 1/3 of the way into the soil and feel the moisture. If it is moist, no watering is needed. If it is damp, get ready to water. If there is only a faint trace of moisture, it is time to water. The three methods above are not only suitable for judging the watering interval for clivias; many southern flowers are also suited to them.

The above are the identification methods we have introduced for judging whether a clivia should be watered. A warm reminder: sometimes watering is not a case of the more the better, so friends growing clivias should be sure to water according to the situation.
