Key points to note in marble goby farming

As an introduced fish species, the marble goby (Oxyeleotris marmorata) has become very popular in China in recent years. Although the more popular ones are marble gobies imported from Thailand and other places, in order to meet market demand, China now also has a certain area of marble goby farming. However, because the marble goby is rather different from other fish, there are many things we need to pay attention to when farming it. Below, the editor brings you the key points to note in marble goby farming. Let's take a look!

1. Farming area

The marble goby is a fish that likes to move in groups; the phenomenon of swimming alone is relatively rare. They mainly gather in groups by the pond edge and near the feeding platform, and are relatively scarce in the middle of the pond. So when farming them, we should reasonably control the farming area according to the marble goby's group-living habit and distribution range. The area of each pond can be kept at around 400 sq m. It is best to plan it into a long strip shape, and then arrange feeding platforms around the pond, which not only facilitates the marble goby's feeding, but also allows us to observe its feeding situation well.

2. Reasonable transport of fingerlings

The scales of the marble goby are rather special, distributed in the shape of barbs. Precisely because of the special scales, when transporting marble goby fingerlings, it is extremely easy for the marble goby's skin to be scratched and die. So when transporting fingerlings we must pay extra attention. If it is long-distance transport, then it is best to ensure a small size, with length controlled below 2.2 cm. At this stage the marble goby's scales are not yet fully mature, so they will not cause great harm. During transport, the transport size should be reasonably adjusted according to the characteristics of the scales to increase the survival rate.

3. Reasonable feeding

The marble goby is a carnivorous fish, and whether wild or farmed, it has the phenomenon of cannibalism. It often happens that the big eat the small, leading to fewer and fewer in number; this mainly occurs at the fingerling stage, and this is also the main reason for the low survival rate of marble gobies. So when farming them we must feed reasonably, ensure that the marble goby's demand for feed is met, and reduce the phenomenon of the big eating the small. Feed about three times a day, do a good job of raising them in separate ponds, and raise marble gobies of the same size together. This fundamentally solves the problem of the big eating the small and improves farming efficiency.

4. Water quality management

The marble goby is a fish that lives on the bottom. When farming it, the water transparency should not be too high, as this will greatly affect the marble goby's rest and growth. The marble goby's bottom-dwelling behavior will change somewhat due to artificial farming; if it is cage farming, because the water level is low, bottom-dwelling behavior basically will not occur. At the fry stage, bottom-dwelling behavior is also not very obvious, while at the fingerling stage it gradually deepens. So when farming them, the greater the transparency, the greater the impact on the fish's growth. Therefore we should ensure the fertility of the water body, change the marble goby's single habitat preference, and increase the yield.

The above is a brief introduction to the key points to note in marble goby farming. In addition to the above, there are also various aspects such as spawning nests, observation, and feeding area that require our attention, and they are closely related to farming efficiency, so everyone must pay extra attention.
