Gold and silver scale koi are a perfect combination of magnificence and luxury. Their dazzling gold and silver radiance, resplendent like inlaid diamonds, pearls, and gemstones, and their graceful swimming posture in the pond always make them the focus of people's attention.
Ginrin Utsuri is one type of gold and silver scale koi. The back of the Shiro Utsuri is covered with sparkling scales, shining with brilliant light like diamonds, which makes it very eye-catching. It is also called "Utsuri Ginrin," though the vast majority call it Ginrin Utsuri. With the contrasting colors of the white ground and black markings, plus the shining brilliance of the silver scales, Ginrin Utsuri looks even more noble and full of presence.
Silver scales growing on the back are more eye-catching than those on the belly sides, and scales arranged in rows are more dazzling than those scattered in dots. In older Ginrin koi, the silver scales mostly appeared near the lateral line on the sides of the belly, and their scale luster was easily lost. In recent improved varieties, the scales are very solid, and the color and pattern tend to be stable.
If you observe carefully, there are two ways the silver scales grow: the raised type and the flat type. The raised type is called "Pearl Gin" or "Grain Gin," "Jade Gin," and so on. The center of each scale protrudes especially, giving a three-dimensional brilliance, resembling a pearl and possessing refinement, but the drawback is that Pearl Gin is difficult to maintain after the koi grows.
The flat type of silver scale is called "Diamond Gin," and in the Hiroshima region it is called "Hiroshima Ginrin" or "Hiroshima Nishiki." The scale luster of Diamond Gin is radial, and the gloss is especially strong, sometimes even overpowering the pattern.
