Good luckKoiArrive | First batch of imports in South China in 16 yearsJapanese koiSmoothly imported in Shantou

Last night, 276 Japanese koi from Niigata Prefecture, Japan, smoothly arrived at the Shantou Huiri Koi Quarantine Farm. This is the first batch of imported Japanese koi in South China after 16 years. This batch of koi departed from Japan by air to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, and was then quickly transported by land to Shantou.

Among the koi imported this time, there are 276 fish, all around 1 year old, with a body length of about 20 cm.

In our country, koi have been regarded as auspicious creatures since ancient times, symbolizing good fortune and prosperity, but our country's high-qualitykoi varietiesbreeding progress has always been relatively slow, while Japan has maturekoi breedingtechnology and equipment, and the koi raised over the long term are of high quality with pure bloodlines. Japanese koi are also known as "living gems in the water" and "the king of ornamental fish." Therefore, our country introduces broodstock from Japan for variety improvement. Due to the outbreak of koi herpesvirus disease in Japan in 2002-2003, the import of Japanese koi was suspended.

In recent years, as the Japanese koi epidemic has been brought under control and domestic market demand has increased, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, after risk assessment, lifted the ban on Japanese koi imports in October 2016, restarting koi access. The koi imported this time are the first batch of imports in South China since our country resumed imports.

According to the inspection and quarantine department, the quarantine requirements for imported Japanese koi are very strict. Imported Japanese koi must come from farms registered with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, and currently only 9 in Japan meet the requirements. After Japanese koi enter the country, they must be quarantined for 30 days at a Class A designated quarantine facility for ornamental fish with strict standards, and then undergo at least one monitoring cycle at a designated farm before being allowed to be produced and sold.

After learning that Super Mali Trading Co., Ltd. had import intentions, the Shantou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau actively intervened, guiding the enterprise to start from scratch and improve hardware renovation, internal system drafting, application material preparation, and future industry planning; at the same time, it formulated a detailed and thorough quarantine plan, actively reported and requested instructions from higher authorities, and secured strong support and multiple convenient and preferential policies from higher-level departments. After nearly a year of effort, Shantou Port finally obtained the qualification to carry out this business, and the koi were able to be imported smoothly.

According to statistics, the domestic koi market has approached 10 billion yuan, with breeding mainly concentrated in Guangdong, but Guangdong has never had the qualification to directly import Japanese koi. The smooth import of Japanese koi through Shantou Port this time is expected to promote Shantou's development of a series of industries integrating breeding, farming, market, exhibitions, fish appreciation, and tourism, injecting new vitality into the transformation and upgrading of the modern ornamental fishery industry.
