Choose clear weather. In summer, do it at 7 ~ 8 AM; in spring and autumn, 9 ~ 11 AM is best.
Hot season  :  sometimes water must be changed 2 times a day, once before the sun comes up in the morning and once after the sun sets in the afternoon. But in most cases, do 1 water change or top-up once a day after the sun sets.

Cold season  : it must start at 2 PM and finish at 5 PM, and be done on a good day with sunlight. If the water looks yellow or pinkish-gray to the naked eye, and smells foul, sour or fishy, it is time to change the water.

In outdoor ponds, if snowmelt water enters the pond, the water must also be changed.
In the cold season, the usual frequency of water changes is: December ~ October, once every 15 days; January  ~ February of the following year, once a month; February ~ March, once a week.
To keep the water clean and prevent the pond (tank) water from being polluted, the container for keepingkoimust be scrubbed once every 1~2 weeks to remove the green algae along the edges of the container, so that overlong algae strands do not affect koi activity and the water does not stink and breed insects.
However, do not destroy the mossy felt layer at the bottom on ceramic containers or cement pond walls. When scrubbing, only brush away the surface impurities, the hardened old moss, and the long fuzz, and clear the slime on the moss surface, while protecting the base of the moss.
