News review

Learned from Shenzhen Customs that its subordinate Wenjindu Customs recently seized 1 case in which an empty vehicle declared on import was used to smuggle Japanese koi, seizing a total of large rare Japanesekoi fish23 fish and a batch of koi fry.

That morning, a truck declared as an empty vehicle entered through Wenjindu Customs and was inspected by customs. Upon inspection, customs officers found a pile of cardboard boxes hidden in the truck compartment, covered with empty white foam boxes.

The cardboard boxes ranged from 70 cm to 1 m in length and were filled entirely with Japanese koi sealed in transparent plastic film with professional oxygen supply. These koi had various beautiful colors such as red-and-white or red-black-and-white, totaling 23 fish, with an average length of 85 cm and the longest at 100 cm, which is relatively rare. Also seized were 120 rare koi fry of 10-15 cm. The person in charge of Wenjindu Customs stated that this was the first case of large rare Japanese koi fish seized by this customs office in recent years.

It is reported that Japanese koi is a rare large ornamental fish, usually with a lifespan of 60-70 years and a body length reaching 1-1.5 m. As koi age and as environmental water temperature changes, the color, luster and form of the patterns on their bodies also constantly change. They have the reputation of "king of ornamental fish" and "swimming gems". These rare Japanesekoi pricesare not cheap. On the market, price tags of several thousand to tens of thousands of yuan are fairly common, and some top-grade koi even reach several hundred thousand yuan.

According to customs, because consumer demand in the domestic ornamental fish market is increasing day by day, especially before holidays such as New Year's Day and the Spring Festival when demand is even stronger, some lawbreakers, tempted by high profits, take risks and try to smuggle ornamental fish into the country among other goods. Customs will continue to maintain a high-pressure posture against smuggling and safeguard normal import and export order.

At present, this batch of Japanese koi has been handed over to the customs anti-smuggling department and the inspection and quarantine department for further disposal.
