The Peacock Koi is a type of Hikarimoyo Koi; Hikarimoyo Koi are generally a new variety obtained by crossing patterned koi with Ogon (golden) koi. The Peacock Koi, however, was produced by crossing Showa Sanshoku with Ogon, so to a certain extent the Peacock's pattern is the same as that of Showa Sanshoku.
The Peacock Koi was improved and obtained in 1960. It belongs to the five-colored metallic koi, and when its whole body is covered in red it is called "Red Peacock"; the German-strain version of this koi is called "German Peacock".

On the Peacock's back the most prominent feature is the large patches of red, and mixed in among these large red patches are black spots formed by black scales. The Peacock's entire body is thus made up of three colors, red, white and black, inheriting the beauty of Showa Sanshoku.
⟧NL⟧ Among the koi produced by crossing, the Peacock Koi is a relatively highly finished variety, and it is named for its beautiful colors, which resemble a peacock spreading its tail.
