How to improve feed utilization in fish farming

Fish is one of the main aquaculture projects in our country, and the fish farming area in our country is very large. Whether it is the four major Chinese carps or rainbow trout and other fish, the market demand in our country is also very huge. However, many fish farmers have very low feed utilization rates during the breeding process, which also increases breeding costs. So how should we improve feed utilization when farming fish? Let's take a look together below!

1. Cultivate natural feed

Cultivating natural feed during the breeding process is a very important measure. When farming, we should improve the pond water quality, and through water quality work, increase the number of plankton in the pond. These plankton can completely serve as feed for fish, and fish also very much like to eat them. Appropriately increasing natural feed can not only effectively improve the feed conversion rate, but also reduce feed input, indirectly lowering feed costs and improving breeding benefits. However, when cultivating natural feed, we must pay attention to controlling the quantity well to prevent an excessive amount from causing dissolved oxygen to drop, which would instead affect fish growth.

2. Proper polyculture

Many fish live in the bottom layer, such as crucian carp. If we are farming mid- and upper-layer fish such as grass carp, then we can appropriately polyculture bottom-dwelling fish such as crucian carp. When uneaten or missed feed from the grass carp sinks to the bottom of the pond, it then provides ample feed for the bottom-dwelling fish. In this way, when we input the same amount of feed, we not only ensure that the grass carp has enough food, but also increase the yield of the bottom-dwelling fish. The feed utilization rate naturally increases, and it can also prevent residual feed from polluting the water quality and affecting fish growth.

3. Reasonable feeding

When feeding, we should pay attention to fixed points, fixed times and fixed amounts, so that the fish develop good eating habits. When we feed, we must not arbitrarily change the feeding location, otherwise some fish will not be able to eat at all. Another point is to control the feeding amount well. The feeding amount should be kept within a reasonable range, ensuring that every fish can eat its fill while also preventing overfeeding. This leads to residual feed spoiling, which will not only pollute the water quality, but if fish accidentally eat it, it will also cause very serious consequences for fish growth, so everyone must pay close attention.

4. Increasing oxygen in the pond

What many fish farmers most often overlook is the dissolved oxygen content in the water body, especially in the area where feed is put. At present, overall at least 70% of dissolved oxygen is insufficient. If dissolved oxygen is insufficient, then no matter how much feed is given, it is futile. If the dissolved oxygen content in the pond is less than 3 mg per liter, then the fish will stop eating. It must be kept at at least 5 mg or more to allow the fish to eat normally. Therefore, when farming, we must ensure that the dissolved oxygen content of the water body is above 5 mg, and add aeration equipment in the farming area to supply oxygen in time.

The above is a brief introduction to how to improve feed utilization in fish farming. When farming, we can also plant some forage grass around the area as supplementary feeding, but it should be harvested and fed as we go to keep the forage grass fresh. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and I hope it can help everyone!
