How to Farm Grass Carp in Summer

Grass carp, also called huan or black qing yu, is one of the four major domesticated fish species in freshwater aquaculture in China. It is distributed in every region of the country and is a very common food fish on the market. Summer temperatures are relatively high, so how does farming it differ from ordinary farming? How should grass carp be farmed in summer? This is surely a question many people want to understand, so today I bring you an introduction to summer farming management techniques for grass carp. Let's take a look.

1. Pond Cleaning

Actually, whether farming in summer, farming in spring, or farming at other times, before farming we need to clean the pond. First, we need to dig out the silt in the pond. Generally, about 15 cm of silt is kept at the bottom of the pond, and the rest must be cleared out. Second, while clearing the silt, we also need to evenly spread a layer of quicklime into the pond, with the amount of quicklime per mu controlled at about 75 kg. This can thoroughly eliminate harmful bacteria in the pond. After disinfection is complete, drain all the water from the pond, then refill it with fresh water.

2. Scientific Stocking

For fry stocking in summer, we generally need to choose fry from nearby, otherwise the mortality rate after stocking will be very high. At the same time, the fry purchased cannot be put into the pond immediately; they also need to be soaked and disinfected with medication. This can avoid bacterial infection and also increase the survival rate of the fry. When stocking, the density of the fry must be controlled, generally 800 to 1,000 per mu. If there is an aerator, they can be stocked somewhat more densely, but the farming quantity should still be controlled at around 2,000 to 3,000.

3. Reasonable Feeding

Grass carp feeding is mainly with grass fodder, so what we need to do is ensure the freshness of the feed and also ensure the quality of the feed. It must not contain residual drug harm or other diseases, as this will affect the normal growth of the grass carp. When feeding, based on weather changes, water quality changes, and the feeding situation of the grass carp, feed at fixed times, in fixed amounts, and with fixed quality.

4. Preventing High Temperatures

Summer temperatures are relatively high, which actually has a certain impact on the growth of grass carp. In particular, a serious rise in water temperature can cause high-temperature damage, and the mortality rate of grass carp is also relatively high, so we must promptly make preparations to prevent high temperatures. Generally, the water temperature for grass carp farming is best controlled between 15 and 25°C. However, summer water temperature is indeed higher than this, so we need to lower the temperature of the lower water layer by raising the water level, providing a good living environment for the grass carp. Also, we can set up shade nets, which can also achieve the effect of lowering the water temperature.

5. Precautions

In summer grass carp farming, the most important thing is preventing high temperatures, which I briefly introduced in the previous point. Second, in the farming pond, it is best not to plant aquatic plants such as water peanut and water caltrop, as these are also harmful to the growth of grass carp, because grass carp will eat these plants. Also, in summer we must make preparations for aeration, because summer temperatures are relatively high, so the dissolved oxygen content in the water is very low, and it is easy for them to die from oxygen deprivation. Finally, we must do a good job preventing and treating various fish diseases, so as not to affect the yield and quality of the grass carp.

The biggest difference between farming grass carp in summer and farming at other times is actually temperature management. The rest, such as water quality management, water and fertilizer management, and feeding management, is basically the same, so when farming, everyone can also refer to the usual farming techniques for grass carp.
