What to Do If a Sheep Stops Ruminating

Rumination, commonly known as chewing the cud, is the process in which certain animals bring partially undigested food back from the stomach to the mouth to chew again after eating for a period of time. It mainly occurs in herbivorous mammals, and the common ones in daily life include cattle, sheep and so on. Many farmers report that their sheep are not eating feed well and also ruminating poorly, so what causes sheep to stop ruminating? How should it be treated? Let's find out together.

1. Pathology of failure to ruminate

There are many reasons why sheep stop ruminating, and the main cause is forestomach atony. Forestomach atony is a disease in which the forestomach stops moving or its motility ceases. In affected sheep, the excitability of the forestomach is lower, the contractile force is weaker, and the rumen contents cannot move normally, leading to an imbalance of the microbial flora in the rumen. Over time, large amounts of putrefactive and fermented toxic substances are produced, which cause indigestion, poor appetite, and reduced or stopped rumination in sheep.

2. Causes of the disease

The main causes of forestomach atony are long-term feeding of powdery, soft forage, or feeding feed that is nutrient-deficient and difficult to digest, or feed that is spoiled, moldy or not fresh, as well as long-term feeding of a single feed. In addition, irregular feeding times and amounts, and insufficient or excessive drinking water can also cause the disease. Furthermore, diseases such as rumen bloat, rumen impaction, fascioliasis, peritonitis and gastritis can also lead to the occurrence of forestomach atony. In most diseases, the early stage manifests as forestomach atony.

3. Treatment methods

After a sheep stops ruminating, you can stand behind the sheep's rump and carefully feel the left abdomen. Compared with a healthy sheep, if it feels relatively hard, it may be rumen impaction; if it feels relatively soft, it is forestomach atony; if it feels empty like a rubber ball and makes a thudding sound when tapped, it is rumen bloat. The treatment principles are to strengthen rumen motility, promote rumination, promote digestion and stop fermentation. First, you can drench with 50-100 grams of soda water, then after 2 hours drench with 2-3 jin of rapeseed oil, and after 12 hours mix into the feed or drench with ruminant stomach-strengthening treasure, once a day for 2-3 consecutive times. This gives a relatively good effect.
