Postpartum Care Methods for Sows

China's pork consumption is relatively high globally, and China's current pig farming area is also very large. In pig farming, management work is very important, especially after sows give birth, when their management work becomes even more important. If sows are poorly managed after giving birth, it will lead to insufficient milk production and a weak constitution, and in severe cases, death. So how should sows be cared for after giving birth? Let's take a look below!

1. Placenta inspection

The first thing we should do after a sow gives birth is to check the sow's placenta. Mainly observe whether the number of placentas is the same as the number of piglets born. If the placenta is not expelled or is insufficient, then appropriate injections of drugs such as diethylstilbestrol should be given. Dilate the sow's uterus, then inject an appropriate amount of oxytocin every half hour to promote the expulsion of the placenta. After about 3 injections, the placenta can be completely expelled. Then, after the placenta is expelled, pay attention to injecting penicillin into the sow's birth canal for disinfection and uterine contraction, to prevent infection and illness.

2. Timely anti-inflammatory treatment ⟧7⟧Sows giving birth for the first time may experience dystocia due to overly large or numerous fetuses. Therefore, the sow's uterus is very prone to injury, so attention must be paid to anti-inflammatory work, with about one week as one treatment course. The main drug used is penicillin, injected about twice a day, and then warm potassium permanganate and other drugs are injected into the sow's birth canal until the sow's vitality recovers. If about 7 days after anti-inflammatory treatment the sow still has a purulent discharge, then the dosage should be increased, using drugs such as streptomycin and dexamethasone phosphate. Chinese herbal medicine can also be mixed into the feed for feeding, and its effect is also relatively good.

Sows giving birth for the first time may experience dystocia because the fetal pigs are too large or too numerous. As a result, the sow's uterus is very easily injured, so special attention must be paid to anti-inflammatory care, with each course of treatment lasting about one week. The medication is mainly penicillin, injected about twice a day, and then warm potassium permanganate and similar solutions are injected into the sow's birth canal until the sow's vitality recovers. If the sow still has a purulent discharge about 7 days after the anti-inflammatory treatment, then the dosage should be increased, using medications such as streptomycin and dexamethasone phosphate. Chinese herbal medicine can also be mixed into the feed for feeding, and its effect is also quite good.

3. Strengthen feeding

Sows consume a very serious amount of physical strength during farrowing, their physical strength declines quickly, and symptoms such as thirst appear. Therefore, sufficient warm salt water should be prepared to provide drinking water for the sow. Within 8 hours after the sow gives birth, feed must not be given; warm water is sufficient. Then on the morning of the second day, appropriately feed some liquid food, because the sow is relatively weak after giving birth, and feed is generally difficult to digest, so the feeding amount should be appropriately increased according to the sow's physical recovery. Then observe the sow's lactation. If lactation is insufficient, then the feeding work for the piglets should be done well to prevent the piglets from starving to death.

4. Daily management

After the sow gives birth, pay attention to the sanitation and cleaning work of the pigsty, and carry out comprehensive and thorough disinfection work on the pigsty. Ensure that the postpartum sow has a good growth environment. And frequently observe the growth conditions of the sow and piglets; the incidence rate of sows after giving birth is relatively high. If any sow has abnormal conditions, such as listlessness and decreased appetite, the specific cause should be identified in time, and then corresponding measures should be taken. About 3 days after the sow gives birth, let the sow exercise appropriately and receive sunlight, to promote the sow's physical recovery and increase milk production.

The above is a brief introduction to postpartum care methods for sows. Postpartum care work for sows is very important. Improper care will not only hinder the sow's growth, but also greatly reduce the survival rate of piglets. That is all for today's introduction.
