Key Technical Points and Management Methods for Walking Catfish Farming
Walking catfish is also called the bearded catfish. Many people may not know much about it. It is an edible fish with a body color of yellow or black and a not particularly large size. The main producing areas of walking catfish in China are Guangzhou, Fujian and other places. So how much do you know about walking catfish? Do you know how walking catfish are farmed? Now follow along with the editor to learn about walking catfish farming techniques.

1. Farming Preparation
To farm walking catfish, the first thing we need to do is choose a good location and build the farming pond well. Generally, we use ponds for farming. The area around the farming pond should be rich in water resources, making it convenient to drain and change water. The bottom of the pond should be leveled, and escape-prevention nets should be placed at the water inlet and outlet. Some aquatic plants can be planted around the pond, which can purify the water quality and provide shade and hiding places. It is also best to set up a layer of surrounding net around the pond to prevent enemies from entering. Finally, before stocking, disinfect the pond with quicklime to reduce the probability of disease outbreaks.
2. Fry Stocking
For walking catfish fry, we should choose seedlings with good constitution, robustness, no disease infection, no external or internal injuries, and uniform size. Before stocking, we also need to disinfect the fry. Generally, they are placed in dilute salt water and washed for about ten minutes, then removed. Finally, stock the fry into the farming pond at a density of 20,000 to 30,000 fry per mu.
3. Feed Feeding
Walking catfish is an omnivorous fish species that mainly feeds on meat. It also has a very wide variety of feed types. For example, field snails, river mussels, fly maggots, fish and shrimp, animal offal and so on can all be used to feed walking catfish. Of course, if high-protein feed is needed, feeds such as red worms, earthworms, and yellow mealworms can also be used. Walking catfish generally need to be fed twice a day, at around eight in the morning and around six in the afternoon. Finally, note that the feed ratio and feeding amount should be reasonably adjusted according to weather changes, the growth state of the walking catfish, and so on.
4. Daily Management
In ordinary feeding management, we should reasonably apply organic fertilizer according to the fertility of the water body to cultivate sufficient plankton and increase natural feed. Second, we should change the water frequently, generally once every half month or so, to prevent water quality deterioration. Of course, if the temperature is relatively high, we need to adjust the water-changing cycle according to the situation. We should also regularly disinfect the farming pond, generally once every half month to about twenty days with quicklime. Finally, carry out pond patrol management, check the growth and activity of the walking catfish, keep timely track of weather changes, and take protective measures well.
5. Disease Prevention and Control
There are relatively many diseases in walking catfish farming, but these fish diseases are also relatively common and frequent, and may occur in many aquaculture operations. For example, trichodiniasis, gyrodactyliasis, saprolegniasis, enteritis, ichthyophthiriasis, and tail spore disease. We can use copper sulfate, potassium permanganate solution, salt water, Yujunqing, mercurous nitrate, and formaldehyde solution respectively for prevention and control.
