Moso Bamboo Planting Techniques

Moso bamboo is a bamboo species in the grass family (Poaceae) and is also the most common type of bamboo in our country. Moso bamboo is also the most widely used bamboo species among all bamboos; it can not only be used to make furniture, paper, and feed, but also has edible and medicinal uses, making it a bamboo species with extremely high economic value. So how should moso bamboo be planted? Below, the editor brings you the planting techniques for moso bamboo. Let's take a look!

1. Land preparation and afforestation

Moso bamboo has relatively strong adaptability, so it is enough to choose soil with sufficient fertility and strong permeability. Before land preparation, all weeds and other plants in the forest land should be cleared, then the land should be deep-plowed about 28 cm, turning the topsoil into the deeper soil layer. Large stones and tree roots in the soil should also be picked out. Note that we should reasonably choose the land preparation method according to the slope of the forest land, then control the planting density well and dig the planting holes. Also dig fertilizer trenches between the rows of planting holes, apply organic fertilizer and compound fertilizer into each trench, then cover with soil and seal it.

2. Germination acceleration and sowing

The outer seed coat of moso bamboo is relatively hard, so we also need to do a good job of germination acceleration before sowing. First, wash the seeds once with clean water, then properly mix the seeds with a germination-accelerating powder. After seed mixing, put the seeds into wet sand for germination acceleration. During the germination process, turn the seeds once a day. When about half of the seeds have sprouted white, they can be sown. The sowing season should be autumn or spring. If the planting direction is bamboo shoots, then it should be sown in autumn. Sowing is mainly done by dibbling, with good control of plant and row spacing. Put about 9 seeds in each sowing hole, then cover with fine soil, preferably so that the seeds cannot be seen.

3. Management of young bamboo

If the goal is to cultivate young bamboo, then after sowing we should spread a layer of rice straw, then water thoroughly, and do a good job of preventing rats and insect pests. When the bamboo shoots emerge, promptly uncover the covering straw, do a good job of weeding, and keep the soil moist. Also apply topdressing at least once a month, mainly farmyard manure. Then, during cloudy days and other times with moderate temperatures, do a good job of thinning seedlings, transplanting overly dense bamboo shoots to holes lacking seedlings. Generally, bamboo seedlings enter the tillering stage about two months after emergence, then grow to about 35 cm in about half a year. Then transplant one-year-old bamboo seedlings into the forest land. After cultivation, the bamboo seedlings can tiller again, and by repeating the work, a nursery can be formed.

4. Water and fertilizer management

When fertilizing, we should pay attention to the type of fertilizer, mainly compound fertilizer, and pay attention to the amount. It must not be too much, to prevent excessive growth and reduce permeability. We should also pay attention to the application of farmyard manure. The application of farmyard manure is very important for the growth of moso bamboo, and it is generally applied as base fertilizer in autumn and winter. Although moso bamboo has relatively strong drought tolerance, insufficient water will have a certain impact on its growth. Therefore, we should water reasonably according to soil moisture content and weather. However, we should also pay attention to the amount; it must not be too much. If water accumulation occurs, drain it promptly to prevent excessive water accumulation from causing root rot, triggering pests and diseases, and affecting the growth of moso bamboo.

The above is a brief introduction to moso bamboo planting techniques. When planting moso bamboo, we should appropriately adjust the planting method according to the planting direction, such as bamboo shoots, nursery, and afforestation, to ensure our planting benefits. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and we hope it can be helpful to everyone!
