An Analysis of the Application of Oxygen Enhancers in Aquaculture
Classification of oxygen enhancers
1---Quick-acting oxygen enhancers
The oxygen-releasing time is relatively short, generally within 4 hours. When oxygen supply is urgently needed, they can quickly alleviate the problem of insufficient dissolved oxygen, such as when shrimp gasp at the surface, during power outages, and other abnormal situations.
2---Long-acting oxygen enhancers
The oxygen-releasing time is relatively long, up to 2~3 days. They are generally oxygen-enhancing bottom-improvement products that can prevent hypoxia. Used in large amounts, they can improve the substrate and slightly regulate PH and hardness.
3---Oxygen-enhancing auxiliary agents
By reducing the surface tension of the water body, enhancing the permeability of the water body, and increasing the oxygen solubility of the water body, the dissolved oxygen in the water is increased; or by oxidizing organic matter and reducing the chemical oxygen demand, the dissolved oxygen in the water body is raised.
Functions of oxygen enhancers
1---Providing sufficient dissolved oxygen
In summer, adverse weather such as muggy heat and thunderstorms often occurs. In ponds with high-density intensive aquaculture, dissolved oxygen often suddenly becomes insufficient. At such times, using oxygen enhancers is just right, because they do not release oxygen as quickly as other chemicals; instead, they provide oxygen steadily and lastingly, and the process of generating oxygen is three-dimensional oxygenation from the pond bottom to the water surface, making them especially suitable for benthic aquatic animals and high-density aquaculture.
2---Regulating PH value
Practice has proven that oxygen enhancers are very effective in regulating PH value and avoiding water acidification. The calcium hydroxide produced after the decomposition of oxygen enhancers can stabilize the acidity and alkalinity of the water body and increase the calcium ion content in the water body, effectively preventing soft shells in crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs.
3---Reducing the content of ammonia and nitrogen in water
Ammonia and nitrogen are the main factors preventing fish growth. Spreading oxygen enhancers in water can significantly reduce the ammonia and nitrogen content of the water body.
4---Removing harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide
Oxygen enhancers that sink to the pond bottom can oxidize organic matter at the pond bottom, purify the substrate, reduce oxygen consumption at the pond bottom, and decrease the production of harmful substances such as ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, and hydrogen sulfide
5---Preventing the reproduction of anaerobic organisms and killing pathogenic bacteria
Oxygen enhancers can be used as oxidants for disinfection, can effectively kill anaerobic bacteria and pathogenic bacteria, and play a role in clarifying the water body. Flocculent calcium hydroxide can precipitate some particles in the water to achieve a water-purifying effect, and to a certain extent increases the photosynthesis of floating plants on the water surface, thereby increasing dissolved oxygen.
Precautions for use
1. Quick oxygen enhancers are used for emergency rapid treatment and must not be used in large amounts. If used in large amounts, they may instead cause the death of shrimp.
2. They must not be stored or used together with acids, heavy metals, reducing substances, flammable materials, etc.
3. Please use them up as soon as possible after opening to avoid moisture causing loss of effectiveness.
4. During transportation, they must not be exposed to the sun or rain.
5. Pay attention to self-protection during use. In particular, do not let hydrogen peroxide splash into the eyes or mouth. If splashed, please immediately rinse with plenty of clean water, and seek medical attention at a hospital if necessary.
