Anthurium Hydroponic Growing Methods and Precautions Explained in Detail
I am very glad to introduce to you the growing methods and precautions for hydroponic anthurium. I am deeply impressed by introducing anthurium. At this time last year, I shared with you the growing methods for soil-cultured anthurium. In fact, hydroponic anthurium and soil-cultured anthurium are worlds apart. Relatively speaking, hydroponic anthurium is more difficult, and the most noteworthy things in growing it are water quality and nutrient solution. If these are controlled properly, then caring for it becomes relatively easy. Below, I will introduce the growing methods for hydroponic anthurium to everyone:

The temperature requirements for hydroponic anthurium growth mainly depend on other climatic conditions. The relationship between temperature and light is very important. Generally speaking, on cloudy days hydroponic anthurium needs a temperature of 18-20 °C, with humidity between 70%-80%. On sunny days, the temperature needs to be 20-28 °C, with humidity around 70%. In short, the temperature for hydroponic anthurium should be kept below 30 °C, and humidity should be above 50%.
For hydroponic anthurium in hot seasons, the stronger the light, the higher the indoor temperature. At this time, a sprinkler system or misting system can be used to increase the relative humidity of the greenhouse air, but it must be ensured that the plants do not stay too wet at night. Reducing disease occurrence can also be achieved by turning on ventilation equipment to lower indoor humidity, so as to avoid flower bud abortion or deformity caused by high temperatures. For hydroponic anthurium in cold winter, when the indoor day and night temperature is below 15 °C, heating is required.
Before hydroponically growing a soil-grown anthurium, it must first be acclimated so that it grows new roots in water, and then it can be placed in water for hydroponic culture.
1. Dig the potted anthurium out of the soil, cut off rotten roots, fibrous roots and old leaves, wash it clean with clear water, put it into potassium permanganate solution for disinfection, and then rinse the anthurium again with clear water. If using a transparent glass container for hydroponic anthurium, it is best to cover the outside of the glass with a black plastic bag to prevent strong light. Cover the top with a transparent convenient bag (to keep warm and moist). Place it in a spot with scattered light, and keep the temperature above 10 degrees.
2. During the acclimation period of hydroponic anthurium, change the water frequently. At the beginning, change it once every 3 days for half a month, and then once a week for the next half month. Each time the water is changed, add nutrient solution once, and the nutrient solution should be selected from those specially used for hydroponic flowers. After one month, the anthurium will grow new roots, and the newly grown roots will be relatively adapted to the aquatic environment. The leaves will begin to sprout new buds.
3. Potting hydroponic anthurium. If a semi-transparent flowerpot is used for hydroponic anthurium, it will be somewhat better. Carefully put the anthurium roots into the hydroponic basket. River stones or ceramsite can be placed in the basket to fix the position of the plant. Add water to half or 2/3, so that the roots not submerged in water can still breathe from the air.
4. For acclimated hydroponic anthurium, the water can be changed according to actual conditions. When there are many impurities in the water, it should be changed. After a period of time, the hydroponic flowerpot should also be cleaned. Nutrient solution should not be added too frequently, because it will cause eutrophication of the water, accelerate the reproduction of microorganisms in the water, and cause the oxygen content of the water to drop sharply, which is not conducive to plant growth.
5. If a larger flowerpot is used for hydroponic anthurium, small fish can also be kept in the water. Plants and fish mutually benefit each other and form a corresponding scene. It can be said to kill two birds with one stone.
Precautions for Growing Hydroponic Anthurium
After adding nutrient solution to hydroponic anthurium, it should also be left to stand as above before use. On the one hand, the chlorine in tap water can volatilize; on the other hand, the water that has been left to stand can remain consistent with room temperature. Do not put the water that has been left to stand in the sun, so as to avoid the formation of green algae. If cooled boiled water is used, that is also feasible.
When hydroponically growing anthurium, the speed of inducing new roots takes a relatively long time compared with plants such as Dieffenbachia 'Silver Queen', but its root system has strong vitality. Once the hydroponic anthurium root system is formed, it is very easy to care for. Therefore, healthy virus-free anthurium plants should be selected, disinfected with agricultural streptomycin, and then acclimated with flower nutrient solution.
