Compared with cattle and sheep, why choose to raise meat donkeys?

1Raising cattle

Suppose you buy 5-6 month old improved Simmental calves. One calf is about 300-400 jin, and the selling price is around 6,000-6,500 yuan. Adding quarantine, transportation and other costs, it comes to about 6,500-7,000 yuan delivered home. The annual farming cost for one cow is about 5,000, including feed, medicine, labor and other expenses.

Improved Simmental cattle gain 400-500 kg in weight per year. Today the price at slaughter is about 12 yuan per jin. One 1,300-jin Simmental cow can sell for 15,000 yuan.

So the net profit for one cow is about 3,500 yuan.

2Raising sheep

According to surveys, the current market price for live sheep is 7.6-8.4 yuan/kg. Generally, lambs are weaned at 35-45 days after birth and fattened for 80-90 days, reaching an average weight of 50 kg, with a gross profit of 380 yuan.

The annual farming cost for one ewe does not exceed 300 yuan, and she produces 3 lambs a year. Each lamb requires about 0.6 yuan per day in feed input (hay + concentrate), and the slaughter profit for each lamb is 308 yuan.

So the annual profit for one ewe is 3 lambs x 308 yuan - 300 cost = 624 yuan.

3Raising meat donkeys

The purchase price of one meat donkey foal is about 4,000 yuan, and adding feed costs and so on, it comes to about 5,500 yuan.

Each meat donkey is raised for 8-10 months. We calculate based on the longest farming time of 10 months. At 10 months the weight reaches 600-700 jin. At present, meat donkeys in good condition are 17-18 yuan per jin. We calculate at the lowest price, 17 yuan per jin. A 600-jin meat donkey can sell for 10,200 yuan. Subtracting the total investment in donkey farming costs of 5,500 yuan equals 4,700 yuan.

So the net profit from farming one meat donkey is at least 4,700 yuan.

Meat Donkey Breed Selection

When choosing a meat donkey breed,you should note:

1. The body size should be large, so it can grow more meat and increase the slaughter rate;

2. It should grow and develop quickly, so it can be fattened rapidly and improve feeding efficiency;

3. The physique should be robust, with small and solid hooves and strong disease resistance.

Although there are more than 30 breeds of donkeys in our country, when choosing meat-type donkeys, it is advisable to choose medium-sized donkeys, followed by large-sized donkeys, while small-sized donkeys are used for making ejiao. Generally, improving local donkeys with improved breeds and using their crossbred offspring to raise meat donkeys is the best choice.
