A Detailed Guide to the Cultivation Methods and Gardening Tips for Haworthia retusa
With a very auspicious name, the perennial herbaceous plant Haworthia retusa is loved by people for its unique window-like structure and distinct vein patterns. Nowadays, quite a few households grow this beautiful plant as a decoration to beautify their homes.
I first came to know it at a close friend's home. I previously knew little about this Haworthia plant of the Liliaceae family. Seeing that its appearance was completely different from other plants, I became curious about this plant that was blooming with small white tubular flowers, so my friend explained its cultivation tips to me. Next, letWarm Little Home Old Gardenerteach you
Temperature:Haworthia retusa is native to South Africa, so it likes a warm climate and environment. The suitable growing temperature is about 15-25°C. When the temperature drops below 10°C in winter, it will stop growing, and if it is continuously kept in too low a temperature, it will freeze to death from frost damage, so attention must be paid to keeping it warm at this time.
Watering:This plant is relatively drought-tolerant, so it does not need frequent watering. Apart from summer, when the soil can be kept appropriately moist depending on the temperature, in other seasons water only when the potting soil is dry, but be careful to avoid waterlogging in the soil, which can cause its roots to rot.
Light:This plant, native to southern Africa, likes a warm, dry environment with plenty of sunlight, and is tolerant of drought and partial shade. From winter solstice to early summer, it can be placed in a bright spot without direct sunlight, while in midsummer it must not be exposed to strong light and needs to be placed somewhere it can receive scattered light.
Soil:Haworthia retusa tolerates poor soil, but the soil needs to remain loose. For the potting soil, peat soil can be used, plus well-draining media such as perlite, vermiculite, snake wood shavings or Tangshan stone mixed in, and the flower pot likewise needs to maintain good water permeability.
Fertilizing:This plant has low fertilizer requirements. Apply a base fertilizer when first planting. During the growing period, about every 10-15 days, Hyponex No. 2 diluted about 2,000 times can be used as water for watering (keep the fertilizer weak). Afterwards, staged fertilizing can be done as appropriate, and fertilizing can be stopped during the winter dormant season.
Although Haworthia retusa is not large in size, its ornamental value is quite high. Its leaf colors are extremely varied, and its form is also quite beautiful and exquisite. What is most rare is that its growing requirements are not particularly high, so it is suitable for gardening beginners to grow.
