Sika deer farming has a bright future, and raising fawns paves the road to prosperity

Along the winding mountain cement road, we arrived at the sika deer breeding base of Gao Yugui, a prosperity expert in Beixin Village. Looking out, stretches of grassy hills were lush and green, and plump, sturdy sika deer leisurely nibbled on the grass, some standing and some lying down. Not far away, several young sika deer were nudging shoulders and chasing one another playfully, forming a natural pastoral scene. As soon as he met us, Gao Yugui smilingly began telling the story of his entrepreneurial journey.

Gao Yugui, born in 1983, is an ordinary villager from Beixin Village and had worked away from home for many years. With the rapid rise of the county's rural tourism industry, in early 2011, while working away, he seized the good opportunity and resolutely returned home, planning to build a career in his hometown. After careful consideration, Gao Yugui decided to devote himself to the sika deer farming industry. Although he had no rich professional knowledge and no strong technical guidance, he dared to think and act, and with an unyielding spirit, he began the road of returning home to start a business.

In May 2011, he raised 250,000 yuan and purchased a batch of sika deer, built the deer shed with his own hands, and moved forward step by step through trial and error. To make it easier to look after the herd, he built a dormitory next to the deer shed and lived together with the deer. The deer shed and the dormitory were separated only by a fence. He knew perfectly well which deer was sick, which deer had a poor appetite and was not putting on weight, and which deer was active and often fought. As time went on, his bond with the herd grew closer, so he tied a bamboo bell on the leading old deer. Wherever the bell on the old deer rang, the herd followed. During the day, he drove the herd up the mountain and cleaned the dung from the deer pen. At 5 p.m., he had to return on time and wait at the mountain pass for the herd to come back.

After persisting for a year, although he put in a great deal of hardship and shed much sweat, due to insufficient technology and experience, in 2012 he not only made no profit but also lost a little. However, he believed: hard work pays off, and as long as he worked hard, he would surely succeed.

In 2013, the village deepened its work on innovation and entrepreneurship, established development directions such as farming, and gave key support to Gao Yugui's sika deer operation. Through Gao Yugui and village officials going to a sika deer breeding base in Beijing to learn scientific breeding techniques and to study the development, production and sales of deer products, Gao Yugui and the others benefited greatly and gained much more confidence. This accelerated the development of the deer farming industry after returning home, and Gao Yugui bought 10 more sika deer to expand the scale of breeding. Gao Yugui said: "I feel very fortunate to be able to catch this good opportunity of nationwide entrepreneurship. Now the policies are so good, and I also hope to have the chance to expand the scale, integrate production and sales, and promote our deer meat, velvet antler, deer blood wine and a series of other deer products."

At present, the town Party committee and government are integrating deer farming resources, forming a deer farming cooperative, creating a branded farmhouse restaurant and a whole-deer banquet, cultivating the deer meat farming industry chain, and advancing the development of the high-mountain green-grass deer industry. Regarding this, Gao Yugui is even more full of confidence. While working hard to explore sika deer pen-raising techniques, he is also screening suitable deer breeds for farming online, making ample preparations for the next step of expanding the scale. Gao Yugui fully believes that with the government's strong support and help, through hardworking hands and unremitting effort, his entrepreneurial path will surely become wider and wider and more and more "deer-filled"!
