In 2004, Qiao Faliang was just an ordinary farmer. Besides farming his own small plot of land, he went out to work during the slack farming season. His life was not wealthy, but it was fairly relaxed. At a dinner gathering with friends, a single remark from a friend planted in Qiao Faliang the idea of making money by farming sika deer.

Qiao Faliang of Qiaojia Village, Hengyuan Subdistrict, Linyi County: "When I was drinking with a few friends, we talked about sika deer, that this specialty farming industry was pretty good, and from then on I held onto the idea of giving it a try."

Can you make money farming sika deer? There is a saying in the trade: every part of the sika deer is a treasure. Deer antler velvet, deer penis, deer placenta and so on all fetch a good price. When Qiao Faliang told his family about his idea of making money by farming sika deer, he was turned down.

Qiao Faliang of Qiaojia Village, Hengyuan Subdistrict, Linyi County: "At that time my family did not agree either, but doing other things or going out to work would not earn much money either, so I gave it a try."

No sooner said than done, Qiao Faliang brought in 100 sika deer from Northeast China. The sika deer had just moved into the deer pen when trouble struck.

He had just brought in 100 sika deer, and half of them died. This was undoubtedly a heavy blow to Qiao Faliang.

At that time he felt that doing anything was too hard, and he thought of giving up, but the deer pens had all already been built. At that point he could neither advance nor retreat, so he gritted his teeth, steeled himself, and kept on farming.

Qiao Faliang steeled himself and gritted his teeth to keep going. Hard work pays off, and gradually, the remaining sika deer grew up under his careful raising. Watching the sika deer grow day by day, Qiao Faliang felt very gratified. Then one day, Qiao Faliang noticed that the sika deer were not acting right. Some lay on the ground without moving, some were unwilling to eat, and some even had diarrhea. This nearly worried him to death.

Qiao Faliang of Qiaojia Village, Hengyuan Subdistrict, Linyi County: "I found some local veterinarians to take a look, and it turned out the food they had been fed had gone moldy and spoiled. At the time the veterinarian told me that feeding moldy and spoiled food to farmed sika deer is absolutely not acceptable, so from then on I adjusted the food, stopped feeding anything moldy or spoiled to the deer, and normally added some anti-inflammatory medicine."

Through these problems, Qiao Faliang kept accumulating experience, and his farming path gradually got on track. Around the Mid-Autumn Festival, the sika deer entered their estrus period. At this time, stags began fighting and butting heads with other stags, and some stags were even butted to death.

Qiao Faliang of Qiaojia Village, Hengyuan Subdistrict, Linyi County: "In the end, through some friends in the know, they gave me a solution: put a stick above the nose and run a wire through the nose. When it butts heads, its nose hurts, and it will never fight again."

Just like that, encountering problems and solving them, Qiao Faliang gradually became an expert at farming sika deer. Nowadays, his sika deer and products are sold all over the country. And along with the hot sales of his products, Qiao Faliang's wallet has slowly bulged.
