Ecological habits

It is an annual herbaceous plant. The leaf tips are pointed, and the whole leaf is heart-shaped. The leaf edges are serrated, both leaf surfaces have rough hairs, and it has long petioles. Its golden-yellow flowers bloom from July to September. The double-petaled sunflower likes sunny and warm climates and does not tolerate cold winters; it is suitable for growing in nutrient-rich sandy soil. It is a very easy plant to grow. It is favored by many beginner flower growers.

Cultivation techniques

1. Water. The double-petaled sunflower has very strong drought tolerance. From seedling growth until before flowering, its water uptake is relatively low; compared with the growth period, it is only one fifth of that of the growth period.

2. Nutrients. Adult double-petaled sunflower plants become very lush, and their root systems are very well developed. When planting, they should be buried deep in the soil to promote root development, and also to prevent the plants from being blown over when the wind is too strong. This flower needs a sufficient supply of fertilizer to grow and open properly. Double-petaled sunflowers grown in pots can be given a sufficient base fertilizer at planting time, and fertilizer should also be applied promptly as top dressing during the growing process.

3. Soil. The double-petaled sunflower has strong adaptability and does not have high soil requirements; ordinary soil can all be used for planting. You can choose soil with a lot of humus.

4. Pruning. The pruning mentioned here mainly refers to removing branches. During the flower disc formation stage of the double-petaled sunflower, branches may appear in the middle and upper parts of its stem. At this time, these branches need to be removed promptly so that the flower disc of the main stem can concentrate sufficient nutrients, thereby ensuring that the seeds produced reach a plump and healthy state. The pruning work also needs to be done promptly. In addition, avoid excessive density so as not to affect ventilation and light penetration. If leggy growth occurs, you can choose to properly prune away some old leaves after the flowers have been pollinated.

5. Propagation method. The propagation method of the double-petaled sunflower is relatively simple, namely broadcast propagation. Sow directly in early April; the conditions at this time are relatively suitable, and its seedlings can grow quickly. Thinning should also be done promptly, and after a certain period of time they should be transplanted into fields or larger pots.
