Many friends who grow cyclamen may have been attracted by its floral fragrance; it has a rich floral scent and, placed indoors, is a natural air freshener. Cyclamen is also called radish begonia, rabbit flower, yipinguan, etc. It is called rabbit ear flower because the shape of its petals resembles rabbit ears. Rabbit ear flower also has a rather special feature: its patterned leaves. According to expert analysis, the patterns on the leaves are very likely a camouflage it uses to protect itself from being harmed by pests.

Cyclamen Flower Language

There are several flower languages for cyclamen, among which two are more common: one is introverted and innocent, and the other is welcoming distinguished guests. The reason it is called rabbit ear flower is not only because its shape resembles rabbit ears, but also because of the legend about the Jade Rabbit. The Jade Rabbit was saved by a mortal, and later raised a daughter who transformed into a plant named cyclamen. Because it came from the immortal realm, rabbit ear flower also carries the meaning of welcoming distinguished guests. Rabbit ear flower is mostly wild, and is relatively delicate when grown indoors, hence the additional meaning of introversion.

Cyclamen Growing Methods

1. Rabbit ear flower likes warmth, so it is very suitable for indoor planting, but it is not suitable for planting in hot regions; an environment above 35°C can easily cause its plants to rot. It has good cold resistance, grows slowly in winter, and is in a semi-dormant state in summer, during which no excessive measures are needed.

2. The growing season of yipinguan is from autumn to the spring of the following year. It is mainly propagated by sowing, and sometimes by dividing the stem bulbs. It should be noted here that its rhizome part is somewhat toxic and must not contact the skin, otherwise it can cause redness, swelling and itching; if ingested by mistake, it may cause symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.

3. When cultivating, be careful to choose loose soil. It is not advisable to directly use a large pot to grow small seedlings; it is best to change pots as the plant grows. Do not apply too much fertilizer, as it is easy to damage the roots. Fertilizing three times a month is enough. Be careful to apply fertilizer from the side, and it is not advisable to apply fertilizer directly to parts such as the leaves of the plant.

4. Its cultivation requires attention to five major care stages. First, in the seedling stage, pay attention to high humidity and variable-temperature cultivation; in the summer seedling-preservation stage, pay attention to lowering the ambient temperature around it; next is the summer bulb dormancy stage. When the leaves turn yellow, watering should be stopped, because it has entered a semi-dormant state.
