Koi breeding
Koi is a variant of the carp, with body colours as bright as brocade; it has red, white, gold, yellow, purple, blue and black rings and patterns that change in endless ways, and it is a relatively large ornamental fish. According to documentary records, the ancestor of koi is the edible carp we commonly eat, and the original variety was the red carp; the carp of Japan was also introduced from China. The earliest koi to appear in the world were roughly between 1804 and 1829 AD.

Koi
The birthplace of Japanese koi is more than 20 villages including Yamakoshi Village and Uonuma Village near Naka Ward in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Based on the trait that carp readily mutate, Japanese people adopted methods such as artificial selection, crossbreeding and cultivation, and bred many new varieties. It is hailed as Japan's "national fish".

Koi
Early koi were called "coloured carp", "flower carp", "patterned carp" and "variant carp"; because Japanese people considered the meanings of words like "colour" and "flower" too ambiguous and weak, and unsuitable for the wartime situation during World War II, the name was changed to "koi".
