A lonely mother mussel curiously floated to the surface, enjoying a rare tranquility. A wind blew past, and a grain of sand flew into the opened shell. Through the soft flesh and the grinding of the sand, the mussel continuously secreted fluid to coat the grain of sand, hoping to heal the tremendous pain - and thus a pearl was formed.

Pearls are produced inside mollusks such as pearl oysters and mussels, formed through endocrine action as mineral (aragonite) spherulites containing organic matter. When a tiny foreign object from the outside enters the body of a pearl mussel and comes into contact with the mussel's mantle, the mantle is stimulated and secretes nacre, coating the foreign object layer by layer, and thus a pearl is formed.

Pearl farming technology, based on the above principle, uses artificial methods and is divided into nucleated pearls and non-nucleated pearls.

Nucleated pearls: A small piece of living epithelial cells (referred to as a cell piece) is cut from the mantle of a pearl mussel and implanted together with an artificial nucleus prepared from mussel shell into the connective tissue of the mussel's mantle. The implanted cell piece, relying on the nutrients provided by the connective tissue, rapidly proliferates around the artificial nucleus, forming a pearl sac and secreting nacre, thereby producing an artificially nucleated pearl.

Non-nucleated pearls: When operating on the mantle, only the cell piece is implanted, and through cell proliferation a pearl sac is formed, which secretes nacre into the sac to produce a pearl. Freshwater cultured pearls are mostly non-nucleated pearls.

Harvesting

Will the mussel die when the pearl is taken out? When taking it out, the mussel is cut open with a knife, which means it is already dead at the time of extraction, because otherwise it would be very inconvenient to take the pearl. Moreover, the pearl grows in the mussel's flesh, and taking the pearl will bring out the mussel flesh along with it. Once the pearl is removed, the mussel is already thoroughly dead.

The farming time for pearls is about 3-5 years. The pearl harvesting season is generally in the two seasons of winter each year, November-December, and spring, January-March. Pearls are luxurious ornaments and also precious traditional Chinese medicinal materials, with high economic value, and are loved by many consumers!
