The Golden Barrel Cactus is a perennial succulent plant in the Cactaceae family, genus Echinocactus. Its stem is round and spherical, growing singly or in clusters. It reaches 1.3 m in height and 80 cm or more in diameter. The top of the globe is densely covered with golden-yellow woolly hairs. It has 21 to 37 ribs, and the areoles are very large, densely set with stiff spines that are golden yellow, later turning brown; there are 8 to 10 radial spines about 3 cm long, and 3 to 5 central spines that are thicker, slightly curved, and about 5 cm long. It flowers from June to October, with flowers borne among the woolly hairs at the top of the globe, bell-shaped, 4 to 6 cm, yellow, with the flower tube covered in pointed scales. The Golden Barrel Cactus is a representative species of the heavily spined cactus group, and its lifespan can reach a hundred years.

Varieties include the white-spined golden barrel cactus, the fiercely spined golden barrel cactus, the naked golden barrel cactus, the angry golden barrel cactus, and the variegated golden barrel cactus; related species in the same genus include the large golden barrel cactus, Yan, Chunlei, and Guitouchui. The Golden Barrel Cactus likes warmth, sunlight, and dryness, fears cold, dislikes moisture, and prefers calcareous soil. Cultivation and management should be carried out according to its habits. Because the Golden Barrel Cactus likes high temperatures and a dry environment, in winter the room temperature should be kept above 20°C during the day, and the nighttime temperature should not be lower than 10°C; if the temperature is too low, it easily causes root rot, but if the temperature is too high, mealybug damage is also likely to occur. It requires ample sunlight, but in summer it must not be exposed to strong direct sun and needs appropriate shading.

When cultivating, choose a well-drained sandy loam soil; for indoor cultivation, artificial potting soil is often chosen. The soil should be fertile; in addition to leaf mold and coarse sand, the nutrient soil should have some calcareous material added, and also some decomposed manure. In addition, the Golden Barrel Cactus is afraid of water accumulating in the pot, so the watering principle of "water thoroughly only when completely dry" should generally be maintained. When changing the potting soil, part of the old roots should be cut off. Let it dry for 4 to 5 days before planting. Do not plant it too deep; it is best for the root collar of the globe to be level with the soil surface. At the same time, a small amount of base fertilizer can be applied at the bottom of the pot, such as cake fertilizer or sesame paste residue. When repotting, during the growing season, water once every half month with fermented organic liquid fertilizer (a concentration of 20% is suitable) or inorganic fertilizer, and never let the fertilizer concentration be too high. In a high-temperature environment with poor ventilation, the Golden Barrel Cactus is prone to pests and diseases. For diseases, spray carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl; for pests, spray insecticide according to the situation.
