I have not been keeping goldfish for long, about one month or so, and during this time Ikept koi, lionhead, red dragon, bubble eye and other varieties of goldfish, and of course there were some that diedbecause of improper methods. Through this month of trial and error, I have arrived at some personal insights toshare with everyone.

I. Points to Note

1.Goldfish are divided into two types: cold-water fish and tropical fish. For beginners keeping fish for the first time,if you plan to keep goldfish, and you do not have the relevant experience,I suggest starting with the koi varietyof fish.

2.No matter what variety of goldfish you keep, the tank used should always be a square tank(rectangular cuboid shape);do not use a round tank, because a square tank is more conducive to the survival of goldfish.

3.The size of the tank is related to the number of goldfish kept;under normal circumstances,1Lwater corresponds to1cmlong goldfish.

4.For beginners keeping fish for the first time, it is recommended not to keep too many fish.On the market,30yuan large fish tankscan keep5-8smaller fish, aged about half a year to one and a half years is fine, because goldfish are highly oxygen-consuming organisms, and their living environment needs enough oxygen. So beginners should juststart by keeping fewer fish, and it is best to buy a larger fish tank.

5.The tools needed for keeping goldfish include: a large fish tank, a fishing net (for scooping fish),special salt fordisinfecting ornamental fish, aquatic plants (potted, not eaten by goldfish, able to carry out photosynthesis),'s)small stones of various colors (decorative type, available on the market),an oxygen pump (also calledan oxygenator, preferably the silent kind),and a filter.

6.Goldfish are suitable for being kept in a cool, shaded place; under normal circumstances, the suitable water temperature is between-50c——250c.

7.The water in the tank must be tap water that has been left standing in a bucket or other large container for two or threedays.

8.Do not change the water too frequently. When the weather is hot(for example,5-8month),,change to clean water once every two or three days. When the weather is cold (for example,10-2month),,3——5change to clean water once every

9.days.Goldfish, like people, need food. Fish shops on the market sell dried fish worms or other granular fish food, and any of them can be fed to the fish, but feed only once every morning, and only give a little each time.Granular fish food generally should not exceed

10pieces, and the same goes for dried fish worms, because goldfish are creatures thatdo not know hunger or fullness - however much you feed them, they will eat that much, until they eat themselves to death - so beginnersmust not overfeed.

10.Those who can afford it can buy a filter and place it at the bottom of the fish tank, the purpose being to convenientlyclean some waste (such as fish droppings) out of the bottom of the tank. Ensure the water quality in the tank is not polluted.

II. Fish-Keeping Taboos

1.Never place the fish tank under direct sunlight to bake; goldfish exposed to direct sunlight very easily get sickand die.

2.Do not pour newly bought fish, or fish caught in a park, directly into the fish tank.Fish brought back from outside are definitely contained in plastic bags or other containers, and there is a smallamount of water, and this water happens to be water the goldfish can adapt to.It is recommended that fish-keeping enthusiasts first dosome preparatory work.
