Precautions for farming northern pike

The northern pike is a rather unusual fish species. It is naturally fierce and is the most savage predatory fish of all freshwater fish. However, the flesh of the northern pike is very tender, and its nutritional value is no less than that of ordinary freshwater fish. There is also a certain amount of farming area in China, but when farming northern pike there are many things we need to pay attention to. Below, the editor brings you the precautions for farming northern pike. Let's take a look!

1. Daily management

Water temperature is very important for the growth of northern pike. The northern pike is a cold-water fish species, according to the results of farming research. At a water temperature of around 25°C, the northern pike has relatively strong vitality. If you want the northern pike to have a strong metabolism, you need to ensure there is sufficient dissolved oxygen in the water and excellent water quality. So generally, farming management is more troublesome during the high temperatures of summer, and the cost will also increase somewhat, and the growth rate of the northern pike will decline. When entering suitable-temperature seasons such as autumn and winter, the northern pike grows faster and its food intake increases, so the feeding amount should be appropriately increased.

2. Water quality adjustment

The northern pike likes to grow in water with sufficient dissolved oxygen, clean and fresh water quality, and a small amount of organic matter. During farming, the transparency of the pond water should be controlled at around 34 cm. Adjusting the water quality well and creating an excellent growth environment is the key to ensuring the normal growth of the northern pike. During the farming process, photosynthetic bacteria should be appropriately splashed to promote changes in water color and keep the pond water always in a state suitable for the growth of the northern pike. Improve the stress resistance of the northern pike, enhance immunity, reduce the incidence of disease, increase the appetite of the northern pike, and promote growth.

3. Bait feeding

The main food of the northern pike is fish, shrimp, and crabs. As just mentioned, the northern pike is a carnivorous fish. During farming, live bait should be fed to improve the survival rate of northern pike fry. If the market price of fry is high, then the feeding amount of live bait fish needs to be increased to promote the growth of the northern pike and increase the reproduction rate. When feeding, we should pay attention to the size of the bait fish. The size of the bait fish should not exceed 2/3 of the body length of the northern pike, and it must be ensured that every northern pike can eat its fill. Otherwise, the northern pike will very easily show undesirable phenomena such as cannibalism and the big eating the small.

4. Water temperature control

During farming, pay attention to observing changes in water temperature. Although vitality is relatively strong at around 25°C, the temperament is very unstable, and phenomena such as fighting and brawling are very likely to occur. So we should pay attention to controlling changes in water stability and appropriately adjust the water temperature according to factors such as weather. During the high temperatures of summer, appropriately increase the pond water level to around 2.1 m, or carry out separate farming to reduce farming density. Do a good job of shading and cooling, and set up shade measures. Ensure the temperature is controlled within the suitable growth range for the northern pike.

When feeding bait fish, also pay attention to the health level of the bait fish. Do not feed bait fish that carry pathogens, such as dead fish or diseased fish. Prevent the northern pike from being infected with parasites, so before putting them in, you must check the health level of the bait fish and do a good job of disinfection to ensure sterile farming.
