Occurrence and Control Methods of the Black Velvet Chafer in Fengxiang County, Shaanxi
The black velvet chafer (commonly known as "louhu") has a body length of 7-8 mm, a blackish-brown or purplish-brown body color, and blackish-brown fine hairs on its body surface. It has one generation per year and overwinters as an adult. In April of the following year, it emerges and becomes active, then feeds on the leaves of weeds, poplar, willow, and elm trees. After crop seedlings emerge, it migrates to sunflowers, beans, and other crops to feed and cause damage. During the day, it hides in weeds and soil cracks. It mostly flies out in groups in the evening to cause damage, biting the tender leaves of willow, elm, and fruit trees, as well as the seedlings of crops such as alfalfa, sunflower, sweet potato, potato, and kidney bean. Adults have a death-feigning habit and phototaxis. From May to July, adults lay eggs. After the eggs hatch into larvae, known as white grubs (soil grubs), they continue to bite and damage the underground roots and underground stems of crops.
Control measures:
1. Manual capture and killing: Taking advantage of the adult pest's death-feigning habit, mobilize people at dusk to use the shaking-off method to capture and kill adults, carried out continuously over large areas.
2. Light trapping and killing: At night, taking advantage of the pest's phototactic habit, use lights or insect-killing lamps to trap and kill them.
3. Poison bait trapping and killing: The black velvet chafer appears most often in warm, windless weather, and generally flies out to cause damage most actively from 6 to 10 p.m. after sunset. Taking advantage of its habit of favoring the branches and leaves of elm, willow, and poplar, in the evening spray or dip willow and poplar branches in a 100-fold dilution of 80% trichlorfon, then scatter and insert them in the field to trap and kill the adults.
4. Poison soil contact killing: Spread dima powder or jiadi powder on the ground, then shallow hoe to mix with the soil; when the pest hides in the soil, it can be contacted and killed.
5. Spraying control: On the damaged crops, choose the following pesticides and spray the leaf surfaces and ground surface for control. 40% phoxim 2000-fold dilution; 4.5% beta-cypermethrin 2000-fold dilution; 4.5% piaojiadi emulsifiable concentrate 1500-fold dilution; 1.8% abamectin emulsifiable concentrate 2000-fold dilution.
