Rumen atony in cattle is a relatively common digestive tract disease in clinical practice. We used Shenling Baizhu San to treat this disease and achieved good expected results, successfully curing hundreds of cases. The application situation is described as follows.

1 Prescription: white hyacinth bean, ginseng (Codonopsis pilosula), Atractylodes macrocephala, licorice, Chinese yam, lotus seed kernel, Platycodon grandiflorus, Coix seed, Amomum villosum, decocted in water for oral administration. It tonifies qi and strengthens the spleen, harmonizes the stomach and drains dampness. It is mainly indicated for weakness of the spleen and stomach, undigested feed, eating half and lying down half the time, chest and abdominal distension and fullness, occasional diarrhea, emaciation, and weakness of the limbs.

2 Prescription analysis: this formula is composed of Sijunzi Tang plus Chinese yam, white hyacinth bean, lotus seed kernel, Amomum villosum, Coix seed, Platycodon grandiflorus, and others. Sijunzi Tang was originally a basic formula for treating qi deficiency of the spleen and stomach, and with the addition of spleen-tonifying Chinese yam, hyacinth bean, and lotus seed kernel, as well as stomach-harmonizing and qi-regulating Amomum villosum, spleen-regulating and dampness-draining Coix seed, and Platycodon grandiflorus which carries the medicinal effects upward, in terms of efficacy, the medicinal nature is neutral and free from the drawback of excess cold or heat. For weakness of the spleen and stomach, undigested feed, and diarrhea, it naturally has good effects.

3 Experience: the author believes that from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, rumen atony is all caused by weakness of the spleen and stomach, so food is not fully digested in the stomach. As a result, the source of nutrition becomes increasingly insufficient day by day, the body becomes weak, and the limbs are weak. When the spleen is deficient and dampness stagnates, the movement of qi is not smooth, and the chest and abdomen are often distended and full. At this time, using this formula to tonify the deficiency, remove the dampness, move the stagnation, regulate the qi, and harmonize the stomach is most appropriate and can achieve the expected effects.
