Detailed Explanation of Key Management Techniques for Cherry Blossoms After Flowering
Management of cherry blossoms after they bloom in early spring is very important. After flowering, dead branches, overlapping branches, and diseased or pest-infested branches should be pruned promptly, retaining vigorous branches and cutting all the rest off at the base, so as to improve ventilation and light penetration, promote constant renewal and vigorous growth. After pruning, the cherry tree should be disinfected promptly with chemicals, or the wounds can be treated with ink, to prevent fungi from entering the wounds after rain and causing rot.
After flowering, apply a dose of fully decomposed organic fertilizer to promote leaf expansion and growth. On the second day after fertilizing, water and loosen the soil promptly to keep the soil loose and benefit root development. At the same time, foliar feeding can be used: mix 2 grams of boric acid, 0.1% urea, and 0.2% monopotassium phosphate into every 15 kg of water as a mixed fertilizer solution. When applying, spray the solution on both the front and back of the leaves, so that the nutrient elements penetrate through the epidermal cells and stomata into the mesophyll tissue and are then transported throughout the plant via the petioles and veins. Spray once every 5-7 days, until the flower buds of the cherry blossom form and the leaves turn dark green.
From May to July, Wuhan has a lot of rain, which favors cherry leaf spot and shot hole disease. The disease mainly occurs on the leaves, and sometimes on new shoots. Affected leaves initially show small purplish-brown spots, which gradually become round lesions; in the later stage the lesions dry up and fall off, forming shot holes with neat edges, and the leaves drop very easily, affecting the growth, flowering, and ornamental value of the cherry tree.
In the Wuhan area, Japanese late cherry cultivars (Guanshan, Kikuzakura) are affected more seriously. Before the cherry tree buds, spray 2-4 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture; after leafing out, spray 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 700-1000 times dilution, or 65% zineb wettable powder at 500 times dilution.
