What to Pay Attention to When Buying Breeding Scorpions
1. When buying breeding scorpions, choose stock from well-known scorpion farms with a long breeding history and a relatively large scale, and check the business license issued by the industry and commerce authorities or the certificate of honor awarded by the relevant unit. Do not buy blindly just to save money or travel expenses.
2. Before buying breeding scorpions, also check the number of breeding scorpions at the supplier. If the supplier has more adult scorpions than young scorpions, it is very likely a breeding scorpion dealer. In a normal farm, the ratio of adult to young scorpions should be about 1:30. Second, also check the number of yellow mealworms at the supplier. For a farm with more than 100,000 adult scorpions, the area for raising yellow mealworms should be no less than 20 sq m, the stored quantity of 4th-8th instar yellow mealworm larvae should be more than 50 kg, and the quantity of 1st-3rd instar yellow mealworm larvae should also remain above 40 kg. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to meet the normal needs of the scorpion farm when raising scorpions at constant temperature.
3. Guard against buying old scorpions and undomesticated wild scorpions. Successfully domesticated breeding scorpions are light yellow in color, with symmetrical pedipalps, obvious segment lines, a gentle temperament, and the ability to live together peacefully in groups. If they are culled scorpions more than 5 years old, the tips of the pedipalps are black, and a very few even have rotten limbs or are incomplete, with rough skin, no luster, and slow movement, and they are likely to die during raising. If they are undomesticated wild scorpions, the breeding scorpions vary unevenly in size, the backs of the scorpions are black, they move quickly, and they fight when living in groups. After reproduction, the number of surviving young scorpions is within 5 per litter, and the young scorpions grow slowly and have poor disease resistance.
4. Regarding the purchase price, the cost of one young scorpion is about 0.2 yuan, and the cost of a pregnant female scorpion is about 0.6-0.8 yuan. If the supplier sells them at a price below 1 yuan each, they may be culled commercial scorpions or wild scorpions bought at a low price and resold; if the selling price of each breeding scorpion is as high as more than 2 yuan, then the price is on the high side. A suitable breeding scorpion price should be about 1.5 yuan each.
5. Before choosing breeding scorpions, first call or write a letter to make an inquiry. Because scorpion farming carries certain risks, even with 1,000 breeding scorpions raised well, the annual profit is at most about 5,000 yuan. The usual price of live commercial scorpions is generally about 300 yuan per kg. Even if processed into dried commercial scorpions, they can only sell for about 450 yuan per kg. If the price information fed back by the supplier differs greatly from this, do not easily believe it.
