The Sichuan Ma Duck is a dual-purpose duck breed.
(1) Origin and distribution: It is a dual-purpose breed with a relatively small body size. Its central production area is located in Mianyang, Wenjiang, Leshan, Yibin, Neijiang, Dachuan and other areas of Sichuan Province, and it is widely distributed in the rice paddy production areas of Sichuan Province. The Sichuan Ma Duck is early maturing and has strong grazing ability, and is the main breed used in Sichuan Province for producing meat-type ducklings.
(2) Appearance characteristics: The body size is relatively small, the constitution is solid and compact, and the feathers are tight. The neck is long and the head is fine. The bill is orange-yellow, and the bean of the bill is mostly black. The chest is well developed and prominent. The shanks and webs are orange-red. The plumage color of female ducks is relatively mixed, mostly hemp-brown. In hemp-brown female ducks, the feathers on the body and rump are based on light brown and covered with oval black spots; the black spots gradually increase in size and deepen in color from the head toward the rear of the body. At the lower two-thirds of the neck, there is often a white neck ring. The abdomen has white feathers. Among hemp-brown female ducks, those with darker color are called "large hemp ducks," and those with mud-yellow feathers and smaller spots are called "yellow hemp ducks"; other mixed-color feathers account for about 5%. Male ducks have a narrow and long body shape, with 2 to 4 sex feathers curving toward the back. The plumage color of male ducks is relatively consistent and is often divided into two types. One is the "green-headed male duck," in which the feathers on the head and the upper one-third or one-half of the neck are emerald green, the abdomen has white feathers, and the front chest has reddish-brown feathers; the other is the "sand-headed male duck," in which the feathers on the head and the upper one-third or one-half of the neck are black-and-white mixed bluish color without emerald green gloss, the shoulders and back have light yellow fine partridge markings, the front chest is reddish-brown, the abdominal down feathers are white, and the sex feathers are gray.
(3) Production performance. ① Egg-laying performance: Under grazing conditions, the annual average egg production is about 150 eggs; the average egg production at 500 days of age is 131 eggs; the average egg weight is 72 to 75 grams; the eggshell is mostly white, with a few blue-green. The egg shape index is 1.4. ② Growth rate and meat production performance: The birth weight is 40 grams, the 30-day-old weight is 443 grams, the 60-day-old weight is 1214 grams, and the 90-day-old weight is 1568 grams. Starting at 100 days of age, force-feeding for 2 weeks can increase body weight by 540 grams, with a weight gain rate of 39.58%, a lean meat rate of 25.21%, and a subcutaneous fat rate of 22.32%; the eviscerated yield at 90 to 100 days of age is 63.1%, and the proportion of breast and leg muscle in the carcass is 29.10% for male ducks and 31.84% for female ducks. The carcass moisture content is 60.70%, crude fat is 22.43%, crude protein is 16.04%, and ash is 0.85%. When Jianchang Duck is used as the sire and Sichuan Ma Duck as the dam, the first filial generation shows obvious heterosis in live weight, average daily gain and other aspects. ③ Reproductive performance: The hatching season is from March to August; the mating ratio of male to female ducks is 1:10; the fertilization rate is about 90%; the average hatchability is about 85%; female ducks are used for 2 to 3 years, and male ducks for 1 year.
