How to prevent fetal resorption in sows? Introduction to practical methods
Embryos die early during development and are absorbed by the sow, commonly known as fetal resorption. It is one of the important causes of low farrowing rates, and this problem can be solved through the following methods.
1. Strengthen feeding management
3 to 14 days before mating, increase protein feed and energy feed, and add minerals and vitamins at the same time, so that they enter the best mating state more quickly; for empty sows in poor body condition, the "flushing" feeding method before mating can be adopted, that is, strengthen nutrition over a longer period before mating, so that they recover body condition and strength as much as possible, which is beneficial for mating, conception and maintaining pregnancy, and improves the farrowing rate.
2. Mate at the right time
The best mating time for sows is 22 to 24 hours after the start of estrus. Judging from the signs of estrus, when the sow changes from extreme excitement to relative quiet, a white stringy mucus flows from the vulva, and the sow stands still when the back and loins are pressed by hand, mating is best at this time; in this way, the embryo mortality rate is low and the farrowing rate is high.
3. Regulate the endocrine system
Seven days after mating, inject 30 mg of progesterone intramuscularly per sow, which can effectively reduce embryo death and prevent fetal resorption in sows.
4. Improve feed quality
For sows during pregnancy, feed quality must be good. Strictly avoid feeding sows moldy, contaminated or frozen feed, otherwise food or pesticide poisoning is likely to occur. In mild cases, it causes embryo poisoning and death; in severe cases, it affects the sow's life safety.
5. Control the ambient temperature well
In the first week of pregnancy, when the ambient temperature reaches as high as 32 to 35°C for a short period (24 hours), embryo death increases; likewise, mating with an overheated boar can also cause embryo death, so it is best to keep the ambient temperature between 15 and 25°C.
6. Appropriate exercise
Mainly free exercise, but prevent the sow from falling down.
