What are the control methods for trunk-boring pests of cherry blossoms?
The longhorn beetles that harm cherry blossoms usually include the star longhorn beetle, the glossy-shouldered star longhorn beetle, and the peach red-necked longhorn beetle
1. The star longhorn beetle has 1 generation per year. When adults emerge from late May to early June, capture the adults: before the star longhorn beetle adult lays eggs, it first bites a notch about 2 mm deep and about 8 mm long in the bark in the shape of a "eight" or "ding", and then lays eggs inside it. During the peak egg-laying period in mid-to-late July, search for the notches on the trunk and destroy the eggs. During the stage when newly hatched larvae are active in the cortex, use a grafting knife to pick the larvae out. For larvae that have bored into the xylem, a steel wire hook is needed to hook the larvae out; a grafting knife can also be used to first remove the frass and wood shavings cleanly, then a plastic oil spray can is used to inject 50% fenitrothion at a 1:50 dilution or Guo Shu Bao pouring liquid, and finally wet mud is used to seal the bore hole tightly.
2. The glossy-shouldered star longhorn beetle has 1 generation per year. For control, manual capture and chemical control are used, with the same methods as for the star longhorn beetle.
3. The peach red-necked longhorn beetle has 1 generation every 2 years. The peach red-necked longhorn beetle often mates and lays eggs from the crown to the base of the trunk on sunny days from 12:00 to 13:00, and adults can be captured after they appear in mid-June. The bore dust and excrement of the peach red-necked longhorn beetle are reddish-brown. When very fine reddish-brown frass is found, use a small knife to slit open the cortex and kill the newly hatched larvae.
The coffee wood moth has 1 generation per year. Because the adults are phototactic, blacklight lamps can be used to trap and kill them during the emergence period. Branches damaged by boring that show a wilting appearance should be cut off promptly, and split open to kill the insects or burn them. They can also be killed by spraying 1000-times-diluted nicotine-matrine solution or 20% miezhu phosphite emulsion at 50 to 200 times dilution.
