How to manage cherry blossoms in summer? A detailed guide to care methods
1. Mulching with straw to prevent drought. In summer, temperatures are high and evaporation is fast, so the amount of watering is greater than in other seasons, but the principle of "do not water if not dry, and water thoroughly when you do" should still be followed. Cherry blossoms are shallow-rooted plants, and their growing roots are close to the soil surface and dry out easily. Straw can be used to cover the base of the tree, which not only retains moisture and resists drought, but also prevents the cherry tree's fine roots from being washed out and exposed, while greatly reducing evaporation of soil moisture.
2. Wrapping the trunk to prevent drought. Within 2 to 3 years after planting, to prevent the trunk from drying out, it can be wrapped with straw. Because the bark of cherry trees is relatively thin, wrapping the bark can prevent drought and sunscald, and also protect against cold in winter. After two or three years, when the sapling has grown new roots and its resistance to the environment has gradually increased, there is no need to wrap it with straw anymore.
3. Watering. In the hot midsummer season, it is not suitable to water at noon; it should be done in the morning and evening. After each watering, the soil should be loosened once the next day, which helps the roots breathe.
4. Pest control. During the high-temperature and drought period from June to August, cherry blossoms are prone to damage by red spiders. Spraying 50% bromopropylate emulsifiable concentrate at 2500 times dilution, or omethoate, dicofol and other pesticides for control, can all achieve relatively good results. Note that mites easily develop resistance, so acaricides should be used alternately.
