Detailed Explanation of Geranium Cutting Propagation Methods and Techniques
When propagating geraniums (Pelargonium) at home by cuttings, because their stems are fleshy and contain a lot of water, rotting often occurs, affecting the survival rate. For this reason, in practice the author combined certain improvements with heavy pruning after flowering, so that when cuttings are taken at that time, the survival rate is noticeably improved. The specific method is as follows:
Choose thick, strong branches, and from the stem tip downward, every 4 to 6 leaves, or measuring a length of about 7 cm to 10 cm, down to the height of the usual heavy pruning after flowering, plan in advance the division into several cuttings. Then, at 0.5 cm below the stem node, carefully use scissors to make a ring cut or peel off the bark layer, with a width of 0.2 cm to 0.4 cm, taking care to keep the branch still standing upright as usual. In this way, one branch that has not been detached from the plant can form 2 to 4 living cuttings waiting to be cut. After that, follow routine care for 2 to 3 weeks, allowing the ring wound to dry, set and heal naturally, then cut it off. Next, place the cuttings in a cool, ventilated place to dry for several hours, and when the cut surface of the cuttings is dry and has formed a film, insert them into pots prepared in advance with potting soil. After inserting, water thoroughly with clear water, then water by the principle of drying out between waterings, and roots will form after 3 weeks.
The author believes that the ring cut and bark peeling before detaching from the plant, on the one hand, directly reduces the wound area on the cut surface of the cutting, and on the other hand, most importantly, blocks the flow of leaf photosynthetic products, causing nutrients to accumulate at the base of the cutting while it is still on the plant. These nutrient accumulations play an important role, physiologically and internally, in avoiding wound infection and promoting the formation of healthy callus tissue, and thereby rapid rooting.
