The dace is an aquatic improved species with relatively high economic value for farming.
Dace is also known as river fish and slippery fish. There are more than 20 species of dace worldwide, distributed only in China, Japan, Korea and the eastern part of the former Soviet Union. China has about 10 species of dace, mainly distributed in the waters of northern China. The species vary by region; those with mature farming technology and relatively high economic value include: 1. Baikal dace. Mainly distributed in the **Burqin area of China. This fish is a small to medium-sized precious fish, weighing 100-200 grams, with excellent flesh flavor, strong reproductive capacity and high population yield. 2. Northeast dace. Most are distributed in waters such as the Heilongjiang River, Songhua River, Nenjiang River, Hailar River, Yalu River, Liao River and Hulun Lake, weighing 500-700 grams; it is a highly efficient farming species and has now been promoted for farming nationwide. 3. Round-bellied dace. Native to the inland waters of northern Europe and Siberia in Russia, and found in China only in the rivers of northern **, it grows relatively fast, with a maximum weight of up to 4000 grams, and has now begun to be domesticated for farming. 4. Taimen dace. Distributed in the Heilongjiang River and Tumen River systems, it is a large anadromous migratory fish that enters freshwater rivers from coastal waters to spawn every May. 5. Pearl-spotted dace. Produced in the Tumen River system, most weighing 1000-1500 grams; because of its relatively high economic value, it has been used as an object of artificial farming and is farmed on a large scale nationwide.
Dace is an upper and middle-layer fish that lives in rivers and lakes with relatively slow currents and clear water. Its main food consists of aquatic insects, mollusks and large zooplankton, followed by aquatic vascular plants, algae, small fish and shrimp, etc. During the juvenile stage, its food is mainly zooplankton. Dace has strong adaptability and stress resistance and is not prone to disease. It can live in seawater, brackish water, freshwater, pure freshwater and alkaline water with a pH above 9. However, it dies very easily after being caught, so its farming technology is relatively difficult.
Dace has relatively high requirements for farming conditions. The pond area should preferably be 0.3-0.5 hectares, with a maximum of no more than 1 hectare; the water depth should reach more than 2.5 meters, and it must also be convenient for water intake and drainage and be equipped with aeration facilities. Before stocking fingerlings, thoroughly clear the pond with quicklime. Whether overwintering fingerlings or summer fry are stocked, the dissolved oxygen in the water should be maintained above 5 mg/L. Generally, organic fertilizer should not be applied to cultivate natural food, otherwise the farming survival rate will be reduced. For every 667 sq m (1 mu) of water surface, stock 300-400 overwintering fingerlings, or if summer fry are stocked, stock 1000-1200, while also stocking 200-250 summer fry of silver carp and bighead carp. Dace has relatively high requirements for feed protein; the protein content of the feed should be no less than 30%, and the proportion of animal protein should not be lower than 35%. Throughout the entire rearing period, water quality management should be strengthened to create a good ecological environment for the fish.
