I. Appearance characteristics

The New Huai pig has black hair over its entire body, with only a small amount of white spots at the end of the body. The head is slightly long, the snout is straight and slightly concave, and the ears are medium-sized, drooping forward and downward. The back and loin are straight, the belly is slightly large but not drooping, the rump is slightly sloped, the limbs are sturdy, and there are more than 7 pairs of teats. Adult boars weigh 230-250 kg, and adult sows weigh 180-190 kg.

II. Production performance

Under feeding conditions based mainly on green feed, the average daily gain of fattening pigs over the entire period from 2 to 8 months of age is 490 g, and each kilogram of gain consumes 3.65 kg of mixed feed and 2.47 kg of green feed. The optimal slaughter weight for fattening pigs is 80-90 kg. At a body weight of 87 kg, the dressing percentage is 71%, the backfat thickness is 3.5 cm, the loin eye area is 25 cm2, the ham and rump proportion is 25%, and the carcass lean meat percentage is about 45%. For adult New Huai pigs, the body weight is 244.2 kg for boars and 185.22 kg for sows. Sexual maturity is relatively early, and boars and sows show sexual behavior at about 3 months of age. First-litter sows have 10.5 piglets per litter, and multiparous sows have 13.23 piglets per litter.

III. Crossbreeding utilization

At a medium nutritional level, when the Neijiang pig is used as the sire and the New Huai pig as the dam for crossbreeding, the crossbred pigs can reach 90 kg at 6 months of age, with a daily gain of 560 g from 2 to 6 months of age. When a Duroc x Er (Duroc boar crossed with Erhualian sow) crossbred pig is used as the sire and mated with a New Huai sow, the three-breed crossbred pigs have a daily gain of 590-700 g. At a body weight of 90 kg, the dressing percentage is above 72%, the ham and rump proportion is 27%, and the carcass lean meat percentage is above 50%.
