What to Do If a Pig Gets Drunk on Distiller's Grains? Detailed Treatment Methods
With the rise of small rural winemaking workshops, more and more farmers are feeding pigs with distiller's grains, but this method, which saves feed and increases profits, can cause poisoning if fed improperly.
1. Causes of poisoning: Distiller's grains are high in crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat and crude ash, but contain more phosphorus than calcium and a small amount of alcohol. In distiller's grains stored for a long time, the content of ethanol and fusel oil (toxic) is higher, and the toxic effects of the two are strengthened, with irritant and narcotic properties.
2. Symptoms: vomiting foamy stomach contents, first constipation then diarrhea, listlessness, decreased appetite, occurrence of rash, dermatitis or skin necrosis, conjunctival congestion and redness of the eyes; in severe cases, restlessness, unsteady gait, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, and dilated pupils. Body temperature 40°C, heart rate 100 beats/min. Sows may abort, have stillbirths or weak piglets, and aborted piglets have no hair; piglets develop diarrhea, and overfeeding can also cause constipation. Necropsy shows pulmonary congestion and edema, gastrointestinal mucosal congestion, and renal hemorrhage with swelling and brittleness.
3. Prevention and treatment: (1) The daily feeding amount of distiller's grains should not exceed 30% of the diet, with 20-25% being appropriate; for sows, no more than 15%, and for piglets, no more than 8%. At the same time, feed corn, soybean cake, wheat bran and fine rice bran, etc., and feed more green fodder. Fresh distiller's grains have a high alcohol concentration; adding 0.5-1% quicklime can reduce acidity and increase palatability. (2) If poisoning occurs, immediately stop feeding distiller's grains, move the pigs to a darker shed to rest, and never use sedatives or anesthetics. (3) Feed a large amount of strong tea, white sugar water or 10% Lysol water for gastric lavage, then inject 25% glucose and 10% calcium chloride.
