[Symptoms] On carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus), symptoms are rarely produced or not produced at all. Infection of carnation by Carnation latent virus alone is not serious, but when co-infected with Carnation vein mottle virus, severe mosaic occurs. [Pathogen] Carnation latent virus (CarnationlatentCaravirus, CLV). It belongs to the genus Carlavirus. The virus particles are straight or slightly curved filaments, 652nm x 12-13nm, and some have reported 620-690nm x 10-12nm

The virus particles are straight or slightly curved filaments, 652nm x 12-13nm, and some have reported 620-690nm x 10-12nm. The sedimentation coefficient is 167S, the nucleic acid content is 6%, and A260/280=1.37. Thermal inactivation point 60-65 degrees C; dilution end point 0.001-0.0001; longevity in vitro, 2-3d at 20 degrees C, and some have reported 6-9d. Serologically, this virus is closely related to Chrysanthemum virus B and Freesia mosaic virus. At present, no differential host has been found to separate Carnation latent virus from other carnation viruses. Both CLV and CaVMV can be transmitted to healthy Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William) by the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), but heat treatment at 60 degrees C for 10min may remove CaVMV. Part of the 3' end of the gene has been studied. There are no reports of strain studies yet.

[Disease development] Although the virus can be transmitted by sap, due to the presence of inhibitory substances in the sap, it is very difficult to transmit the virus directly from carnation to other plants. However, this virus can still infect a variety of plants outside the family Caryophyllaceae. The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) transmits it in a non-persistent manner.

[Control] Refer to the control methods for Carnation vein mottle virus.

(See: Control methods for Carnation vein mottle virus

1. Carnation plants are difficult to free from the virus by heat treatment, but are easily freed from the virus by shoot tip culture. Use virus-free seedlings as propagation mother plants and establish a virus-free mother plant base.

2. Use 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, or 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, or 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, etc., to control aphids and reduce vector insects.

3. Pay attention to field sanitation management, emphasize tool disinfection, and reduce human-mediated transmission.

4. Emphasize disease-resistant breeding. Dianthus chinensis (China pink) has relatively strong disease resistance, but its flowers are small and the flower color is poor; while carnation has the characteristics of large flowers and bright flower color. Adopt various measures to breed new carnation varieties with multiple excellent traits and strong disease resistance.
