How much do you know about the basic facts of carnations?
Carnation, also known as Carnation (transliteration of the English word Caxnation) and musk carnation. It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Dianthus in the family Caryophyllaceae, but it is usually cultivated as a biennial. The plant height is 60-100 cm, the stem is upright, the leaves are linear-lanceolate and opposite, the stems and leaves are elegant, and the flowers are beautiful with delicate colors. There are many flower colors, commonly including red, yellow, pink, white, purple, orange and various bicolor types. Because the flowers are beautiful and the colors are rich, their uses are extremely wide. The yield is high and the price is relatively cheap. The single-flower period is long, and it is cultivated in many countries around the world. It is as famous as roses, chrysanthemums, and gladioli, and is one of the four major cut flowers.
Carnation is the representative flower of Western Mother's Day. On Mother's Day, people often give a single stem or a bunch of pink carnations to their mothers to express children's love for their mothers.
According to the number of flowers on the flower stem, carnations are divided into two types: large-flowered carnations (one flower per stem, that is, single-flower stems) and spray carnations (generally 5-7 flowers per stem). Large-flowered carnations are more common and are popular varieties on the market, with large flowers and rich colors.
Today's carnations are roughly divided into eight major groups:
1. Border: blooms once a season, with thin flower stems, 30 stems per plant, petals with deep notches, and fragrant. 'Greti' and others are famous varieties of this group, mainly used for flower beds and potted plants.
2. Fringed: blooms in all four seasons, is an old group, with red, vermilion, white, yellow, etc. The flower shape is similar to the edge of 'Chabot', and it is a 1-year or 2-year herbaceous flower.
3. Chabot: is hybridized from tree carnation and 'Fringed'. Fragrant, large flowers, petals with deep notches, suitable for autumn sowing, blooming successively from June to autumn.
4. Fairy Tale: blooms in all four seasons, its flowers are even larger than 'Fringed', with thick stems and wide leaves. With continuous improvement of varieties, it has many flower colors, and the petals have shallow notches and are nearly round.
5. Genius: improved from the large-flowered varieties of 'Fringed'. It has a high double-flower rate, is similar to greenhouse carnations, and the flower stems elongate quickly, with beautiful flower colors.
6. Malmaison: is a large-flowered type improved from the British 'Laced Carnation'. The petals are round, and it is more suitable for potted plants than for cut flowers. It has many split calyces, and the leaves are wide and recurved.
7. Perpetual: is the main group of today's greenhouse carnations, gradually improved toward cut flower use, with many varieties. It was mainly bred in the United States, can also be cultivated in the open field, has large fragrant flowers, and is perennial.
8. Banquet: belongs to greenhouse carnations, with small flowers and multiple flowers on one stem. It can bloom indoors and is used for table decoration in Europe. It is a popular variety.
