Key Techniques for Winter and Spring Cutting Propagation of Carnations
Carnations are generally propagated by cuttings, carried out in winter and spring, and can be done anytime from December to April of the following year. The lateral buds used as cuttings at this time grow robustly and are of the best quality. At the same time, cuttings taken during this period can control the plants to bloom at New Year's Day and the Spring Festival of the following year.
First, the growing medium should be prepared, generally using garden soil mixed with 30%-40% rice husk ash or sandy soil, mixed evenly, then placed in cutting pots or wooden boxes.
Cutting must be done in a greenhouse, selecting cuttings from mother plants that are vigorous in growth, uniform in flowering, and have thick, short-jointed branches. From the middle of vigorous branches, select short and thick lateral buds, each 3-4 cm in length. When taking cuttings, the "snap-off method" should be used, with both hands working simultaneously: one hand holds the main stem, the other holds the bud selected as the cutting, and the old leaves and bud are peeled off outward together, so that the base is intact and bears node scars. Then immerse the cuttings in water or spray water on the peeled areas, allowing them to absorb enough water, and set aside for cutting.
The depth of insertion should be 1/3 to 1/2 of the cutting length. After insertion, water thoroughly and maintain a temperature of 10°C-15°C. Seedbed care should be meticulous. Water again the next day after insertion. If the leaves show wilting, spray water on the leaf surface several times to keep the soil slightly moist, but not overly wet. At the initial stage after insertion, shade from the sun is generally needed on clear days to avoid strong light, generally shading for about 2 weeks. After about 30-45 days, the cuttings will take root, and generally after the seedlings have survived for 1 month, they can be transplanted.
If cuttings are taken after March, the selected cuttings can be slightly longer. Since the temperature gradually rises at this time, with large day-night temperature differences and high humidity, it is necessary to set up a frame for shading for about 3 weeks, and pay attention to ventilation to prevent seedlings from suffering pests and diseases.
