What to Do If Silkworms Don't Spin Cocoons? Causes and Solutions
In the course of @#@250@#@, the phenomenon of silkworms not spinning cocoons occurs from time to time, causing certain losses to sericulture production. First, the causes of silkworms not spinning cocoons must be identified, and then measures taken for prevention and control. The main causes are:
1. Pathological factors. For example, flacherie and soft rot infect and develop before mounting, destroying the secretory function of the silkworm's silk glands; or pathogens produce large amounts of toxic metabolites in the silkworm body, paralyzing the nerves so that the silkworm cannot spin silk and form a cocoon.
2. Physiological factors. Abnormal middle silk glands, mainly caused by excessively high rearing temperature, overly tender leaves, and imbalanced secretory glands, which lead to abnormal silk glands and inability to spin silk. Next is abnormal anterior silk glands, mainly caused by exposure to large amounts of coal gas, fishy odors, alcohol and other harmful gases during rearing, resulting in spinning impairment.
3. Trace pesticide poisoning. During rearing or mounting, silkworms ingesting or contacting trace amounts of pesticides causes endocrine gland imbalance in the silkworm body, preventing them from spinning silk.
4. Improper mounting operations. This causes the silkworm's silk glands to rupture or the temperature to be too low, making the silkworm stop spinning silk for a long time; mounting too densely makes it impossible for silkworms to find a place to spin cocoons, or the mounting tools are not dry, and an improper mounting environment, etc., all easily lead to the situation of not spinning silk and forming cocoons.
Prevention and control methods:
1. Prevent silkworm diseases and strengthen management. Strict disinfection is required to eliminate pathogens, cut off transmission routes, and do a good job of disinfecting the rearing room, rearing tools and the surroundings of the rearing room. Spray disinfection can be done with bleaching powder solution containing 1% effective chlorine or 1% to 2% fresh limewater supernatant; strengthen feeding management to enhance the silkworm body's resistance. Select silkworm breeds with strong disease resistance to avoid the impact of hot and stuffy summer and autumn weather on the silkworm house, maintain suitable temperature and humidity in the rearing room, fresh air, and a clean rearing bed; during the grown silkworm stage, supplement with chloramphenicol, 1 to 2 times per instar, with each milliliter containing 500 units of chloramphenicol.
2. Strictly prevent trace pesticide poisoning. Prevent feeding mulberry leaves contaminated by pesticides; prevent the rearing room, rearing tools and sericulture supplies from being contaminated by pesticides. Ensure that pesticides are not stored in the rearing room, rearing tools do not hold pesticides, and sericulture supplies do not come into contact with pesticides.
3. Mounting operations must be meticulous. When mounting, achieve the "three uniformities" and "three dryness." The three uniformities mean: uniform maturity of ripe silkworms, with no partially unmatured ones; uniform mounting density, with no overly dense areas; uniform maturity at mounting, with no overly mature ones. The three dryness means: the mounting room, mounting tools, and environment are dry.
