How to prevent fish from oxygen deprivation in winter? These practical methods you need to master

Livestock Farming 0 views
In winter, although the feeding activity of fish in ponds decreases, they still need a certain amount of dissolved oxygen to maintain slow breathing. The dissolved oxygen in a pond mainly comes from the photosynthesis of phytoplankton and the direct dissolution of oxygen from the air into the water. However, in the cold winter, once the pond surface freezes over, oxygen from the air cannot dissolve into the fish pond. When heavy snow covers the ice surface, sunlight cannot shine directly into the pond water, and the green plants in the water cannot carry out photosynthesis to produce oxygen. Moreover, in winter most fish gather at the bottom of the water. If the water quality is poor, the fish are weak, and management is poor, it can easily cause fish to suffocate and die from lack of oxygen.

The methods for preventing fish from oxygen deprivation in winter are introduced below:

Clear away accumulated snow. During the freezing period in winter, if snowy weather occurs, promptly clear away the accumulated snow on the surface of the fish pond so that sunlight can shine into the fish pond water, ensuring that the green plants in the fish pond water carry out photosynthesis normally and release oxygen in time.

Break the ice to add oxygen. After the water surface freezes over, break open the ice surface every morning and evening. Generally, for each mu of fish pond, 5-6 sq m of ice holes should be broken open. At the same time, remove the broken ice chunks to prevent rapid refreezing.

Add and change new water. During the overwintering period, in addition to maintaining the highest water level to increase oxygen and keep warm, new water should also be regularly injected to improve the living environment of the fish and increase dissolved oxygen, generally once every 20 days. If the pond water quality is poor and aging occurs, the old water and harmful substances in the pond should be discharged in time. Each water change should be 1/3 of the original pond water, and then new water should be injected in time.

Fertilize appropriately. When the water quality in the fish pond is clear and lean, a certain amount of inorganic fertilizer can be applied at noon on a sunny day. This can not only promote the growth of phytoplankton in the water and keep it warm, but also increase dissolved oxygen in the water through photosynthesis. The fertilizer should be applied as a mixture containing nitrogen and phosphorus components.

Stir the pond regularly. The purpose is to loosen the bottom mud, mix the upper and lower water bodies, promote the rapid decomposition of harmful substances at the bottom of the pond, and maintain a certain resting place for the fish during the overwintering period so as not to cause oxygen deprivation. The method is to use a bamboo pole to stir part of the pond bottom at noon on a sunny day, and after a period of time stir another part.

Sprinkle chemicals. Regularly add appropriate amounts of chemical agents such as quicklime and bleaching powder into the pond to increase the oxygen in the fish pond and improve water quality.
