Long-finned koi successfully bred at aquatic improved variety trial farm
In Renhe Village, Bingcun, Meixian, there is a farmer named Qiu Dong. Two years ago, he suffered a natural disaster while growing golden pomelo, and nearly 400,000 yuan of investment was almost completely lost. He then switched to raising grass carp, but an 8-mu pond earned him only about two thousand yuan in a year, unable to make ends meet, and he fell into no small amount of debt, with his finances in dire straits. One day, a fisheries expert appeared and showed him a kind of fry, which brought a turning point in his life. Now, he has become a locally somewhat well-known "fish" farming specialist, with an annual net income of more than 20,000 yuan, and has led three or four neighboring relatively poor villagers to prosper together. The fish he raises are almost sold out by pre-order before they even grow up, with demand exceeding supply.
Exactly what kind of "fish" brought him such "good fortune"?
Long-finned koi help farmers prosper
A few days ago, the reporter came to Renhe Village and met this honest and simple farmer. He led the reporter and the group into the breeding farm. As handfuls of fish feed were scattered into the pond, the water began to stir with waves - one after another graceful, brightly colored koi surged up from the bottom of the pond, scrambling for food. Their long, soft fin rays danced like butterflies. Qiu Dong told the reporter that this was the new koi variety developed by aquatic science and technology personnel of Meijiang District that had brought him good luck - the Meijiang long-finned koi.
Qiu Dong said: "The year before last, when my finances were at their most difficult, a technician from the Meijiang District Aquatic Improved Variety Trial Farm brought me the long-finned koi they had bred and suggested I try raising them. I took his advice and brought in 50,000 fry from the Meijiang District Aquatic Improved Variety Trial Farm. Now, those 50,000 were long ago @#@136@#@. 70% of the fish are sold to the Pearl River Delta region including Guangzhou and Shenzhen, while the rest have been pre-ordered by local aquariums, enterprises, resorts and so on." Qiu Dong said that the money he earns now has not only paid off his debts, but he has also expanded his 8-mu pond to 10 mu and is preparing to further expand @#@233@#@ scale.
Six years to breed precious long-finned koi
As early as 2000, aquatic science and technology personnel of Meijiang District discovered that koi are deeply loved by people because of their colorful body colors. However, the koi varieties sold on the market were relatively uniform, and their short bodies and fin rays affected their ornamental effect and economic value. Could a new koi variety be developed that had the brilliant body colors and splendid markings of Japanese koi, as well as the long fins, long tail and slender body shape? Aquatic science and technology personnel of Meijiang District began to focus on research into long-finned koi. After as long as six years of meticulous study, they finally developed the long-finned koi, an independently innovated scientific and technological achievement. This variety was bred according to the principles of fish genetics, selecting a mutant strain of red carp from the Meijiang River system (long-finned, long-tailed) as the female parent and Japanese koi as the male parent, and through crossbreeding and selection produced the first filial generation of koi. Its hybrid offspring include multiple varieties with body colors of gold and silver, golden yellow, red and white, silvery white, orange-red, light yellow, crimson and other intermingled patterns, possessing both the long fins and long tail of the female parent and the colorful hues, robust and graceful body shape, and varied swimming postures of Japanese koi, with relatively high ornamental value and notable economic value. According to verification, this project filled a gap within the province and is of great significance for developing ornamental fish farming in Meizhou and even the whole province.
Broad market prospects for long-finned koi
In recent years, the Meijiang District Aquatic Improved Variety Trial Farm has bred a total of 1,058,900 long-finned koi fry, at an average of 1.6 yuan each, directly creating economic returns of 1,694,000 yuan and newly added output value of 12,944,000 yuan. In addition, according to incomplete statistics, of the long-finned koi fry sold to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and local merchants, 450,000 were raised by distributors into large-size long-finned koi of about 400 grams and sold to tourist attractions, at an average price of 25 yuan each, once again creating economic benefits of 11,250,000 yuan. On the market, long-finned koi 25-30 cm long can generally sell for 20 yuan each, while those with better body length and body color can sell for more than 100 yuan, and some precious varieties of long-finned koi with very good markings, body shape and length can even sell for thousands of yuan or tens of thousands of yuan. Judging from many years of sales, long-finned koi are more than 2 times the price of ordinary koi. In developed areas such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the selling price is more than 3 times that of ordinary koi.
At present, long-finned koi farming in Meijiang District is still in the promotion stage, with about ten or so farming households raising long-finned koi. Meicheng has more than 20 ornamental fish retail stores, selling about 300,000 koi annually. According to surveys by scientific researchers of the Guangzhou Fangcun ornamental fish market, the Shenzhen Longgang ornamental fish base and the Meizhou ornamental fish market, currently only a small number of long-finned koi varieties are on the market. Once merchants discover long-finned koi, they rush to place orders, and long-finned koi are in short supply. Therefore, the long-finned koi bred in our city have very good market prospects.
