Clownfish Breeding Techniques and Methods Explained in Detail

Turban snails, five-claw scallops and the like, just like the abalone (jiukong shellfish) we commonly eat, can be artificially bred: when the gonads are mature, a simple method of raising or lowering the temperature can be applied to stimulate them to release eggs and sperm. First take out the mature broodstock, with a male-to-female ratio of about 1:3, use a heater or ice cubes to slowly raise or lower the water temperature by about 4°C, then rapidly lower or raise it by 2°C, then place them back in the original tank to return to room temperature, and a large amount of white smoke-like sperm and egg granules can be seen being released. In most shellfish, females slightly outnumber males. Taking the abalone as an example, lifting its mantle reveals the sex: when the male is mature its gonad is plump and pale or milky white, while the female's is green or brown.

Clownfish are the most adorable group among coral reef fish. Almost every beginner in keeping marine fish will pick them first, mainly because they are healthy, strong and easy to keep, not expensive, and because of their special ecological behavior of symbiosis with sea anemones. Clownfish are a protandrous hermaphrodite species, meaning they are born male and mature first as males. There are quite a lot of successful cases of breeding them in aquariums, and there are also many professional breeding farms abroad. This species has many interesting phenomena; for example: when a group of clownfish of the same species is in an aquarium, only one is male and the rest are all female. When the male is removed, after a period of time one of the females will change sex into a male; and when the original male is put back, the sex-changed male will return to its original female state!

If you also want your clownfish to have many offspring, then you might as well try the following method:

First, build them a warm and comfortable little home. To make this little home, find a few pieces of live rock and build them a cave with a natural barrier. Be sure to maintain proper water flow, and it is best to place an oval pebble inside the cave, with pebbles also placed outside the cave entrance. Then find a relatively large sea anemone that, when expanded, can almost cover the entire cave entrance or wrap around the pebbles. The ideal sea anemone is the magnificent sea anemone (Heteractis magnifica) or the long-tentacled anemone (the "princess anemone"), to provide safe shelter. Next, select 1-2 smaller males (the male tomato clownfish is bright red), and match them with 4-5 larger females with mature abdominal gonads (the female tomato clownfish is dark red). After keeping them for a period of time, observe the pairing situation; for example, among most paired clownfish, only one pair stays together in the sea anemone while the rest are driven away. To prevent interference, the other clownfish can be removed, and then prepare a special food for them at each meal: you can mix VG microbial nutrient supplement with vitamin E into the bait and feed it to them.

Observation of various signs before spawning:

(1) When the gonads of the male and female are mature, the male's mating organ and the female's oviduct will protrude noticeably.

(2) When the spawning period approaches, there will be an interesting phenomenon: they will diligently tidy up the nest environment, using their mouths to sweep away algae and gravel.

(3) Most breeding farms use hormone injections to induce maturity, and spawning will begin within 24 Hrs after the injection.
